Not silly questions at all...we bought a new refrigerator to go with our new home. It has a built-in water dispenser and ice maker both which go through filters to purify our water. At work, we have jugs of filtered water...out here they use Hinkley Springs (like Poland Springs back home) ;-)
Almost any brands at Home Depot or Lowe's are about the same if you hook 'em up to your faucet and do the job just fine. Just don't buy at K-Mart or WalMart...quality is better at one of the other 2.
