Jane,
Equal has terrible effects, which can be intensified on people with heart murmurs. I have one, and some effects that I have experienced are quite scary: heart palpitations, memory loss, depression, suicidal hallucinations and feelings. There is great corruption on part of the government and the FDA in it's passing...
-check out this recent news article, it is long so just skim it for symptoms and the truth behind its dangers-
author/syndicated columnist, David Lawrence Dewey's, writes about a $350 million dollar plus class action racketeering lawsuit filed against the NutraSweet Corporation (equal), Monsanto Corporation, American Diabetes Association and Dr. Robert H. Moser and some 50 other defendants. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld is mentioned in the lawsuit. The lawsuit was filed on Setember 15th, 2004 in San Franciso Unted States Federal District Court..

"$350 Million Dollar Plus Lawsuit Filed
Against Nutrasweet Aspartame Sweetener"
I switched to Stevia. It is great in coffee, oatmeal, etc... It is a natural alternative to the chemicals. I've been using it for 3 years now and love it. You just need to find a brand that is not full of fillers. Google "stevia" to find out about its history and traditional use. You can almost always find it at a good healthfood store, or you can order it online.
take care,
lara
>>>okay, so i switched from Sweet n Low to Splenda a few
>>>months ago, but i remember somebody saying (chocolate
>>>i think) that Splenda has pretty much the same
>>>unhealthy effects....i just have a few questions if
>>>anyone can answer....is the sweetener Equal "equally"
>>>as bad, lol....i've used it a few times so i'm just
>>>curious.....also, somebody mentioned Stevia--a
>healthy
>>>alternitive however you cant heat it above 180
>>>degrees? if this is true, would it be okay to put it
>>>in coffee? sorry about all the questions but i cant
>>>have regular sugar- it makes me jittery and
>>>light-headed
>>>
>>>thanks

>>They are all chemicals and you should be careful with
>>the amounts you consume. A number of studies,
>>appearing in journals like Carcinogenesis and the
>>Journal of Applied Nutrition, as well a U.S. Food and
>>Drug Administration inquiry, have indicated that there
>>are very serious side-effects to consuming Aspertame
>>(i.e. Neutrasweet, Splenda etc.)
>>
>>According to the studies, doctors world-wide have
>>misdiagnosed Aspertame poisoning as multiple sclerosis
>>(MS), and it can also mimic or worsen fibromyalgia,
>>arthritis, Parkinson's disease, lupus, multiple
>>chemical sensitivities (MCS), diabetes, epilepsy,
>>Alzheimer's disease, birth defects, chronic fatigue
>>syndrome, lyme disease, attention deficit disorder
>>(ADD and ADHD), panic disorder, depression and other
>>psychological disorders.
>>
>>A chemical breakdown of Aspertame shows that 10 per
>>cent of the additive is methanol. When consumed, the
>>body's digestive system turns methanol into
>>formaldehyde and formic acid. Formaldehyde is a deadly
>>neurotoxin. The recommended maximum intake of methanol
>>is 7.8 mg/day. A one litre bottle of diet pop contains
>>approximately 56 mg of methanol. Something to think
>>about next time you reach for a second or third diet
>>pop.
>>
>>Aspertame is also 40 per cent aspartic acid. Aspartic
>>acid is what neurobiologists call an excitotoxin. When
>>there is an excessive amount of these excitotoxins
>>floating around in your system, they literally burn
>>out the neurons. It's like plugging a 40 watt bulb
>>into a 100 watt socket, it just overloads the circuit.
>>Needless to say, killing neurons en masse is going to
>>effect your thinking ability and motor skills.
>>
>>That may have been close to the type of warning you
>>got from someone else before. Always remember, in
>>small amounts, most doctors would say either sugar or
>>a sugar substitute is fine for your health...just
>>don't overdo it on either end. Too much of anything
>>is never a good thing.

>thanks deb- i certainly didnt know all of that!! might
>explain some of my, errrr, health problems! all i
>drink is diet soda, literally. i hardly ever drink
>anything else. maybe once a week i'll drink some water
>or something then it's right back to soda! as for the
>"fake sugar", i average one packet of that a day,
>which isn't much (i hope!)hmmm, i guess this means
>i'll have to stop drinking soda...damn. in your
>opinion, do you think once a day would be bad? well
>thanks for the info i guess i'll need to change some
>of my habits! sheesh that's a lot of health
>problems.....
