I've read The Master which has been variously praised and panned which seems to be the normal process where any well-known writer is concerned. I found him close to Edel's great (but wooden) work on James so far as facts were concerned and imaginatively right to my idea of what James' inner workings must have been.

So, do you think it's good enough to win, I mean, up to the standard of previous Booker winners?

I don't know. I'm a little vague on the subject of awards and often feel that they are not really meaningful or that a winner is infallibly a good read.

Well, only a few weeks ago I read last year's winner, Vernon God Little, by DBC Pierre. I'd heard so much about it, and not all good stuff, that I was sure I wouldn't like it. To my surprise I found I actually enjoyed it, or most of it - I thought it went to pieces a bit towards the end, but I won't say how in case anyone has yet to read it. I also read The Good Doctor, by Damian Galgut, and I was pretty disappointed in that one, although most of the reviews I read said that it was wonderful.
