Can gay couples get the same rights as those living in de facto relationships?

The other day the news reported that the first gay couple who got married in Britain divorced about 3 weeks afterwards. I think marriage as an institution as a whole needs to be reviewed, personally... when people are willing to just get married spontaneously and then divorce just cos they feel like it... how is it "special" any more? But, that's just my opinion.
