Hey Everybody,
Well I've just been enjoying the sudden influx of posts on here. It's interesting to see everyone get a little heated...always good for the ol' noggin'! Let's just all remember to stay friends! I'm also very impressed by how clearly most of ya'll have been able to rally points back and forth in a fairly intelligent manner. I, however, will try to remain neutral and not jump in, being the instructor and all :).

Speaking more on the issue of Affirmative Action, but also general acceptance :
Something just to keep in mind is that it is literally impossible to truly KNOW what it would be like to be in someone's shoes of a different race, upbringing, religion, class, etc... I guarantee if you spent a month living on the reservation, a month in the inner city of Detroit, a month as a christian/mormon/aethiest, or a month in extreme poverty, you would be a changed person, and probably (let's be honest) a more understanding and accepting human being. Not saying anyone's views on here are right, wrong or unaccepting, but we all need to keep in mind that these issues run deep with tangled histories and hardships. To lay down an absolute against people at this point in our lives (4-6 years doesn't make me THAT much more world-wise than many of you) can seem a bit pre-emptive. I too have been "one-upped" on scholarships due to affirmative action ideals, however I found it would have been just as embarrasing for me to complain and whine then it would have been for me to be rewarded strictly because of my race or history. We're all talking about how hardwork and persistence should be the end all be all (I worked hard, REWARD ME!), but we seem to be caught up on not getting the plush job we really wanted...the larger scholarship. If hardwork is so powerful, perhaps working harder for ourselves would be more productive than trying to untangle the very dense web of affirmative action. There is no limit to how hard a person can work if they really want something. I may not have always gotten exactly what I worked for, but in the end, I was rewarded one way or another (money and jobs are not the only signs of a successful effort).

See how neutral that was? I managed to type alot and never really make a point. :) Always keep your minds open...I'm glad to be writing for such a smart group of kids! No wonder we're awesome. Embrace your intelligence and thrive on expanding your mind, but never use your wisdom for evil! haha On that note, keep the debates (and their heads) ringin'-

Seth
