I think that the forum is the perfect place to discuss it. We've tried having these conversations in person and that never works out. People don't get to finish what they want to say and things get misinterpreted. If you say it on the forum you're allowed to finish a thought without someone jumping in and there's less of a chance of saying something you'll regret. Meaning you get a chance to cool down before responding to something you don't agree with. Unless you're a really compulsive typer. I think so far the conversation has stayed civil, in fact the most civil I have ever seen our group with controversial subjects.
We're all growing up and I think it's a good idea to start learning how to express our views without attacking people. Notice I never attacked Vanessa personally even though I happen to strongly disagree with what she said? This is developing real life skills and after all, isn't that what WGI is really about? Yes it's about the music but it's also about so much more. We've always known that this group differs radically on some views. I think it's a testament to the kinds of people we are that we can discuss and debate these things and still be World Champs.
I think that these conversations can be a useful device in uniting us rather than dividing us. If a group of teenagers from Page, AZ can be a team and hold such radically different views on politics, religion, and life in general, what's keeping the rest of the country from doing the same? Now I'm under no illusions. I realize that we can't change the world, but maybe we can make some small difference. Maybe I'm an idealist but I think that if more people realize that a team can be built from such a range of views we'll be just a bit closer to happiness.
