Part 5

The Kiriakis Mansion
Salem, USA

Eric had pulled Jonathan, Kaitlin and Colleen into the hallway of the Kiriakis Mansion. Kaitlin was dying to know if
that man out with Carrie was Colleen’s father. "Eric, pardon my asking, but is that…is that Colleen’s father out
there?" Eric nodded. "Mike Horton is his name. And I thought I would suggest to you to go ahead and go back to the
hotel. Carrie and Mike have a lot to sort through, and I think it would be best for you to go ahead and leave. I can
take care of Colleen for Carrie."

Kaitlin looked at Jonathan. ‘I have to some talking to do of my own,’ she thought. "Okay Eric," she said as she
handed Colleen to him. "Tell Carrie if she needs me, to give me a call on my cell, okay?" Eric nodded. "Thanks for
everything Kaitlin. I know Carrie really appreciates it." Kaitlin smiled. "I love Carrie like she was my own sister. I was
happy to be there for her." Eric looked at Jonathan. "Nice to meet you, man. I’m sure I’ll see you around." Eric
stated. Jonathan laughed. "Well Salem seems to be one of those places where you just happen to run into people so
I’m sure I will run into you. Nice to meet you too, Eric."

With that, Kaitlin and Jonathan left. Eric was contemplating what he should do next when he looked at the bottom of
the stairs and saw her. "Greta," he stated softly. Greta saw the pain in Eric’s eyes but didn’t want to. Greta turned
away and Eric grabbed her arm with the one free hand he had(the other was holding Colleen). "Greta, please." Greta
whirled around and stared at Eric icily. "Eric, what do you want me to say? That I forgive you for breaking my heart?
That I forgive you for sleeping with Nicole when you claimed that you loved me? Eric I can’t do that-" Eric cut her
off. "I didn’t sleep with Nicole!" He exclaimed. Greta stared at him. "What?" Eric sighed. "That’s what I was trying to
tell you at the hospital before I left. I didn’t try to say anything after that because I’m an idiot. Greta, I am sorry that I
hurt you. I never meant to do that. But what happened with me and Nicole was a huge misunderstanding."

Greta didn’t know what to believe. She knew what Austin would tell her. ‘Eric’s a good guy, he wouldn’t willingly try
to hurt you.’ But she also knew Nicole, and knew that Eric had fallen for her hard. "Eric, you told her you loved her."
Eric looked at her with surprise. "When did I tell her that?" Greta paused. "The night you…the night you…Nicole told
me-" Eric sighed exasperated. "Nicole told you? And you believe her? Look Greta, what you missed before you ran
off was me kicking Nicole out of my life. Greta, she tried to get me to go back to her by faking having cancer! I was
being nice to her because I thought she was sick. When I found out otherwise I told her off and asked her to butt out
of my life. That’s when I drove off and hit the train."

Greta just stared at him. She didn’t know what to say. So she decided to avoid it. She looked at Colleen. "Eric,
who’s baby is that?" Eric knew she was trying to change the subject and humored her for the time being. "This is
Colleen Grace Brady. Carrie’s child." Greta’s mouth opened into an o of surprise. "Carrie?" she said. Eric nodded.
"Greta, everything I have said is true. Carrie was the one who knocked sense into me and told me to come back to
Salem in the first place." Greta looked at him. "Why would she do that?" Eric sighed. "Because she knows better than
anyone else, that I am in love you with."

Greta was in shock. ‘Does Eric really love me? Do I want to take the chance of having my heart broken again?’ Eric
looked at her and put his hand to her cheek. Tears were starting to form in her eyes. "Greta, I’m not asking you to
decide right now. I’m asking you to listen to what I have said, and listen to your heart. I made a mistake by running
away and not facing my problems. But I’m willing to face them now. I have to go give this child back to its mother.
Don’t forget what I said Greta. I love you, more so than anyone in this entire earth. It took some male stupidity for me
to see it."

Greta watched him as he left. ‘Eric loves me?’ she thought. She needed to talk to someone. Austin was too distraught
over Sami. ‘Hope,’ she thought. ‘I’ll go talk to Hope.’

Mike stared at the beautiful woman standing in front of him. "Carrie, it’s really you." Carrie smiled faintly and nodded.
"I’m really surprised that you came. I thought with everything that had happened between you, Austin and Sami that
this was the last place you’d want to be." Carrie turned away. ‘Mike doesn’t know how right he is,’ she thought.
‘Only it has nothing to do with Sami or Austin.’ Mike realized that he had opened his big mouth. "Carrie, I’m sorry. I
just can’t believe you’re really here."

Carrie knew that Mike was being nice by not bringing up Colleen or their past. But she also knew that he was dying
to figure out what was going on. She sighed and turned around. "Mike, you didn’t come over here just to talk small
talk. I know you have questions, as well as I." Mike looked at her. "Well of course I do, it’s just that-"

"It’s just that you’ve been away for so long that you don’t know what to say." Carrie cut him off. "Mike, did you
realize that when you left I was devastated? Do you know just how much you hurt me? Why did you do that to me
Mike? You always promised that you would never hurt me like Austin and you lied. You left me just like Austin."

Those words stung Mike hard. He knew he deserved them. He had been an idiot. Carrie was starting to cry and
instinctively Mike put his arms around her and hugged her as she cried into his chest. "Carrie, I am so sorry. I should
have never left you. I was scared and stupid. I didn’t see an end to Ali’s lawsuit and you were trying so hard to work
out your marriage with Austin that I thought I was in the way. I thought it would be best for me to leave so that you
could have time to work things out with Austin."

Carrie looked up at Mike. "You really thought I would go back to Austin? Mike, I thought it was quite obvious that I
was in love with you, and not with Austin. Yes, I know I was so ridden with guilt after the affair that I tried to work
things out with Austin. But I soon realized that I was doing it out of duty, and not out of love. When you left Mike, I
died inside. So much that I had to leave myself. Just like you, I shut myself off from Salem. If it weren’t for Eric, I
wouldn’t have come today."

Mike wipes the tears that were streaming down her face. "I’m glad he convinced you to come." Carrie looked at him.
"What about you? What made you come back to Salem?" Carrie asked. Mike sighed. "Winston and Lewis, actually.
Apparently University Hospital wasn’t too pleased with their new Chief of Staff, Dr. Craig Wesley. They begged me
to come back. It had been a year and I thought about it. I decided it was time to come back. I tried to get a hold of
you Carrie, but no one would tell me where you were."

Carrie thought how ironic it was. "Mike, I tried to get a hold of you too. No one knew where you were. And your
mother wouldn’t give up any information because she was angry with me for hurting you."

"It appears we both caused this non-communication to happen." Carrie nodded. "Mike, there’s something we haven’t
discussed yet that we need to." Mike looked at her. "What’s that?" Carrie smiled slightly. "Our daughter."

Dot.Com
Salem, USA

After leaving the Kiriakis Mansion, Jonathan and Kaitlin decided to stop by Dot.com to have a cup of coffee and
catch up with each other’s lives. As usual, the place was flooded with teens.

"So what have you been up to, Jonathan? Are you still writing music?" Kaitlin asked. Jonathan took a sip of coffee
then set the cup down. "Yes, I am still writing music. I haven’t done a whole lot with it yet though. I’m working for
Sony right now, and hopefully I’ll be able to make a demo soon."

Kaitlin smiled. "That’s wonderful! I always thought you were a wonderful songwriter and that you could make it in the
business." Jonathan looked at her. "Really?" Kaitlin nodded. "Well thank you, that means a lot to me." He paused.
"How about you, what have you been up to?"

"Well currently I am teaching at St. Patrick’s grade school in San Francisco." His eyes widened. "San Francisco!
Wow! Do you like it?" Kaitlin smiled. " I love teaching. I’m not sure how I feel about San Francisco though. It’s a
beautiful city but the cost of living is atrocious! I’ve often thought about moving somewhere else, closer to the
Midwest so I could be close to my family. But you have to find a job first." Jonathan nodded.

As they were talking Belle Black and Chloe Lane came in. Belle noticed Jonathan immediately and whispered
something to Chloe. As they edged closer to the table where Jonathan and Kaitlin were sitting, Belle called out, "Hello
Jonathan!"

Jonathan looked up and saw that Belle Black and her redheaded friend were standing right in front of their table.
Jonathan smiled. "Hey Belle. Out and about all ready?" Kaitlin watched the interaction between them with curiosity.
Belle smiled. "Well since my sister apparently ran off with another guy I figured there was no reason to stay." Kaitlin
coughed. "Oh! Belle and…" he looked at the redheaded girl. "I’m sorry but I don’t remember your name." Chloe
looked at him and nervously said, "Chloe Lane."

Jonathan smiled. "Belle, Chloe, this is Kaitlin. She’s good friend from college." Kaitlin shook both of their hands and
said, "Nice to meet you." The smiled and nodded. Chloe looked at her watch. She turned to Belle. "Belle we better
go, I told Phillip we’d meet in an hour." Belle sighed. "Nice to see you again Jonathan. You sang beautifully at the
wedding." Belle stated. He smiled. "Thanks Belle. Have a good day." With that, the two grabbed their coffees and
left.

Kaitlin couldn’t hold it in any longer. She laughed. Jonathan stared at her. "What?" He asked curiously. Kaitlin
managed to compose herself and stop laughing. "Isn’t it obvious? Those girls are obviously hung up on you. How old
are they, 16? What is it with you and younger women Daley? If I recall correctly you dated younger women through
most of college."

Jonathan looked at her. "Okay, okay. So I’ve robbed the cradle a few times." She raised her eyebrows at him.
"Okay, a lot." Kaitlin laughed. "They never worked out anyway." Kaitlin stopped laughing and got serious. "You mean
you and Shelly aren’t together?" Jonathan shook his head. "We broke up the summer before my senior year. I just
didn’t tell anyone about it."

"I wish you would have." Kaitlin muttered softly. "What was that?" Jonathan asked. ‘Had he heard her correctly?’
Kaitlin looked at him. "Oh nothing. I’m sorry that it didn’t work out." She responded. "Well I just look at it as the
person I’m destined to be with is still out there. I just haven’t found her yet." Jonathan replied.

Kaitlin stared into her coffee. Jonathan tried to read her expression but he couldn’t. "I know it’s getting kind of late,
would you like me to walk you back to the Salem Inn?" Jonathan asked. Kaitlin nodded. "Sure, that would be great."
They threw out their coffee cups and left Dot.com.

Brandon’s Car
Somewhere on the road

Sami turned to Brandon. "Where are we going?" she asked. Brandon shook his head. "Now Samantha, I’m not going
to tell you. It’s a secret." Sami sighed. "Brandon, I can’t do this. I understand why you felt the need to stop the
wedding, and you’re right. I couldn’t marry Austin today. Not when I’m all confused. But I can’t just leave Austin like
that. It isn’t fair to him."

Brandon looked at her. "Now see, that’s the only point I was trying to make. I will take you back to Salem if you
promise me one thing." Sami was almost afraid to ask. "What?" she finally asked. "That you’ll give me a chance. See if
what you feel for me is as deep as what I feel for you."

Sami looked down at her hands. "Brandon, I can’t promise you that you and I will be together. However, I can tell
you that I am willing to figure out what’s going on with us, and what’s going on with me and Austin. Just don’t expect
me to be making an rash decisions. I have a lot to deal with right now."

Brandon looked at her and smiled. "Fair enough. Where would you like me to take you?" Sami looked at him. "I
suppose I should go home and try and get a hold of Austin." Brandon turned the car around and headed back to
Salem.

Mike stared at Carrie with his mouth open. "You mean she’s…" Carrie nodded. "Mike did you honestly think there
was any way possible that she would be Austin’s?" Mike just looked at her. "Well I, uh…" Carrie smiled. With
perfect timing Eric walked in with Colleen. He knew he was interrupting, but he also knew that Carrie and Mike
needed some time with Colleen. He walked over to Carrie and whispered in her ear. "I sent Kaitlin back to the hotel.
I thought you might want some time with your daughter. Call me if you need anything." He handed Colleen to Carrie
and Carrie smiled gratefully at Eric. He then disappeared from the room.

Mike watched as Carrie held their daughter. "I just can’t believe this. Carrie, she’s beautiful." Carrie looked at Mike
and smiled. "Do you want to hold her?" Mike nodded. Carrie handed Colleen over to Mike and he smiled at the
sleeping baby in his arms. "Hey there," he whispered. "I’m your daddy." Mike instantly fell in love with her.

Carrie watched the scene unfolding before her. She was so glad that Mike was taking this okay. She knew her family
would not be as easy to deal with. ‘Don’t worry about them now,’ she scolded herself. Carrie hated to interrupt the
interaction between Mike and Colleen but she and Mike still had some unfinished business to talk about.

"Now you understand why I wanted to get a hold of you so badly." Carrie stated. Mike looked at her. "Carrie, I am
so sorry. I was a fool to have left in the first place." He looked at Colleen, who was sleeping peacefully in his arms.
He then looked up at Carrie. "Carrie, I want you to know that no matter how hard I tried, I never stopped loving you.
I thought about you all of the time. My mother told me to go back to Salem and fight for you, but I wouldn’t listen."

Carrie fought tears as she heard his words. "We didn’t exactly make it easy for each other." She looked at him. The
tears started to fall. "Every day I’d be reminded of our love by the child you are holding in your arms. I couldn’t forget
you either Mike. how could I?" Mike took his free hand and wiped away her tears. "Carrie I still love you with all of
my heart. I promise you that no matter what happens, I will always be here for you and Colleen. I won’t make the
mistake I made again."

Carrie listened to his words. She was thrilled that he still loved her. But could she really believe that? "Mike, I love
you too." She paused as Mike smiled. "But we’ve both changed a lot since we last saw each other." Mike looked at
her. " I know," he said softly. "I was hoping, if you’re willing, to start over. To ensure that the feelings we have are still
true."

Carrie thought about this. "Mike, what about my job? I can’t just waltz out of Marin Hospital like that!" Colleen
stirred slightly and Mike looked at her. "Carrie, I’m not asking you to do that. It’s really up to you. I know that if you
were willing, that Winston and Lewis would love to have you back as PR Director. Right now, no one is in the
position."

Carrie thought about that. Could she really come back to Salem for good? She looked at Mike. "I’ll have to think
about it." Mike nodded. "Would you like me to give you a ride home?" Carrie looked at him. "Sure," she replied.

Carrie, Mike and Colleen left the Kiriakis Mansion unsure of what the future held. Carrie knew that whatever
happened, she was in for a long ride.

to be continued...
