I've been in post withdrawal lately, so I figured I'd re-post this while I'm working on my other two.:) Hope you enjoy!!

Remember Me Part 1

Carrie drummed her pen on the legal pad in her lap, lifting her hesitant gaze to Mike's bent head. Mike was leaning intently over his desk, avoiding her gaze, seemingly immersed
in his work.

Carrie knew better. Ever since she'd ran out after his admission of love for her a few days ago, things between them had been tense. The only time he had spoken to her, it had
been about work. Even then, there had been a detached coldness to his voice. She'd hurt him leaving without a word like she had, but his admission had thrown her into an
unbelievable tailspin. She'd followed her first gut reaction and ran as far away from him as she could.

Her heart broke at the memory of the pain in his eyes. She had so wanted to wrap her arms around him and tell him she loved him too, but immediate guilt had ripped at her,
telling her it couldn't be.

She cleared her throat uncomfortably. "Are the budget cuts going to work, do you think?"

"I don't know," Mike said distractedly, his eyes still focused on the forms in front of him. "We'll have to wait and see."

Carrie nodded. "Yeah, I suppose so." Mike continued with his work, not even bothering to look up. Carrie watched him for a long moment, drumming her fingers against her
knee impatiently. She suddenly slapped her notepad down on his desk, unable to endure the uneasy silence. "Mike, we can't just leave it like this..."

Mike threw his pen down with a frustrated sigh. "What do you expect me to say, Carrie? What do you expect me to do? I can't change what I said the other night, and I can't
take it back."

Carrie leaned forward, bracing her hands on the desk. "I don't want to lose you in my life, Mike. I want my friend back."

Mike let out a huff of humorless laughter. "Friend, huh?" He leaned back in his chair, his eyes looking directly into hers. "Is that what we are, Carrie? Just friends? If my memory
serves me correctly, I think we passed the 'just friends' stage a long time ago." Mike's gaze burned into hers, a dangerously heated spark igniting in his eyes. Carrie felt her face
go hot, a surge of longing going through her.

Mike tore his gaze from her, vaulting himself from his chair and turning his back to her. "I think we'd better call it a night, Carrie. Go home to your husband."

Carrie rose slowly, silently from her chair, heading towards the door. She shook away the guilt that hit her as her hand came to rest on the doorknob.

Mike's head jerked up at the soft click of the lock. "What're you doing?"

She leaned back against the door. "I'm not leaving."

"Carrie, don't..." he warned, squeezing his eyes shut.

Carrie walked swiftly to him, less than a foot separating them."No, Mike. I'm not leaving. I've lied to myself and to you for way too long."

The muscle in Mike's jaw twitched, his teeth clenching tight as he tried to block her out of his senses. "Get out of here, Carrie, before we do something we're going to regret."

Carrie closed the gap between them, grabbing his shirtfront and pulling her down to him. "It's too late for that, Mike," she murmured against his lips,"...because I'm already in love
with you." Her arms twined around his neck as she kissed him hungrily.

Mike hesitated only a moment before yanking her into his arms, crushing her against him. Mike felt her hands slide down his chest, deftly undoing buttons as they went. A groan
tore from his chest as she yanked the tails from his waistband, shoving it off his shoulders and to the floor.

Remember Me-Part 2

Mike's mind raced, everything going into a jumbled blur as Carrie's fingers dug into his back. They stumbled back awkwardly, a small gasp escaping Carrie as her back hit the
wall.

Her eyelids went heavy as Mike's lips trailed in a heated path down her neck. "We shouldn't be doing this," He whispered against the sensitive skin, his breathing ragged, "but
God help me, I want you so much..."

Carrie's knees went weak as she clung to him. "Then don't stop," she whispered shakily against his lips. "Don't stop..."

Mike pressed her closer, kissing her desperately. His conscience crept out in a nagging reminder as his hands swept over body. You can't do this, it warned him. If you love her
like you say you do, then don't do this to her.

Mike tore his mouth away from hers. "No...we can't do this." His heart clenched at the pain in her eyes. "I won't destroy your life this way. I won't cause you that kind of pain."
He quickly turned his back to her, unable to look at her as he struggled with his next words. "Go now, Carrie," he said more tersley than he'd meant to. "Go home to Austin."

Carrie's eyes squeezed shut, her throat constricting as she fought vainly against her tears. She pushed off the wall, almost running to the door. She fumbled desperately with the
lock, swinging the door open as Mike started toward her. "Carrie..."

She nearly sprinted down the darkened hallway, the tears trailing freely down her cheeks.

"Carrie, wait!" Mike leaned weakly against the doorframe as she disappeared down the corridor. His jaw clenched tightly as the elevator doors slid closed behind her.

Carrie's forehead rested against the cold metal, her shoulders shaking with soft sobs. "Forgive me, Austin," she whispered, the guilt hitting her in waves. Her throat tightened as
Mike's face filled her memory. "Forgive me, Mike."

*************************************************************************************************************************************
Carrie closed the door to the apartment. "Austin?" She tossed her keys wearily on the side table. "Austin?"
When no one answered, Carrie searched the apartment, finding it empty. She had to find him. Austin deserved to know the truth.

A knock sounded at the door, and Carrie rushed to open it. A young man stood before her, holding a thin stack of papers. "Carrie Reed?"

Carrie stared at him in puzzlement. "Yes?"

He held the papers out to Carrie. "I was asked to deliver these to you as soon as possible, Ms. Reed."

Carrie's eyes quickly scanned the page, the room beginning to tilt as she read.

Carrie,
I didn't want it to end this way, and I wish things could have been different between us. I love you, and I always will, but we can't lie to ourselves any longer than we
already have.

Sami and I are going to be married. We fell in love, and we couldn't deny our feelings any longer. Forgive me for not being honest with you from the start, but I didn't
realized my feelings until after our wedding. I've already had the legal end taken care of, and all you have to do is sign these papers for the divorce to be final.

I wish you all the happiness in the world, Carrie. Please believe that I never meant to hurt you, and that this is truly the best thing for both of us. It would have been
wrong to let this drag on while we tried to pretend it was all okay.
Austin

Carrie could only stare at the note in shock. With shaky fingers she lifted the note to find divorce papers.

"Mr. Reed has completed everything. All that's needed is your signature."

Mechanically, Carrie took the pen he held out to her and scrawled her name across the line before handing the forms to him. He turned and left without another word.

Carrie closed the door, leaning back against it for support as she re-read Austin's note. She crumpled it, her fist tightening around it as she slid bonelessly to the floor. She shook
her head. "Coward," she mumbled, her jaw tightening in anger as she pitched the note across the room. He hadn't even been able to give her the divorce papers himself.

She scrambled to her feet, wiping furiously at the tears on her cheeks. The apartment was suddenly stifling, the walls seeming to close in on her. "I have to get out of here," she
said aloud to herself.

Carrie grabbed her keys and purse, closing the door behind her with a slam. She tottered in an unsteady sprint to the stairwell. Her heel caught in a ridge on the top stair, and
Carrie's mouth opened in a silent scream as she was thrown forward. Her head connected with the steps, a blinding pain assaulting her as everything smeared into a colorful blur,
then went black.

Remember Me- Part 3

Carrie's eyelids felt heavy as she struggled to open her eyes. The swirling blackness threatened to envelop her once again, and she fought against it, forcing herself awake. The
room around her was only a bright, disoriented white blur. She blinked again, hard, and the room came into focus--as did the figure beside her bed. Carrie squinted up at her as
the sunlight from the window behind her illuminated the room.

Lexie let out a sigh of relief." Carrie, thank God! We were so afraid you weren't going to wake up."

A shooting pain knifed Carrie in the back of her skull and she winced, her hand gingerly resting against the spot. "What happened?"

"It's okay, Carrie. You hit your head pretty hard when you fell. Some lady in your apartment building found you and called 911. She said she'd heard you fall and came out to see
what happened."

Carrie's head fell back weakly against the pillows, her head throbbing as the ache at the back of her skull began to increase. "I fell?"

Lexie nodded slowly, her eyebrows furrowing in concern. "Yeah, you took a tumble down a flight of stairs in your apartment building and hit your head, remember?"

Carrie stared at Lexie blankly for a moment, as though she were speaking a different language. Her head turned on the pillow, her gaze going to the empty white wall beside her.
"No," she answered simply.

"Well, don't worry. It'll probably all come back to you soon. You can tend to temporarily block out incidents like that." She paused for a moment, watching Carrie. "Would you
like me to keep trying to get in touch with Austin? We haven't been able to find him yet, but your dad and Marlena are waiting outside. They got here just a little while after we
brought you in. They already called the apartment, but..."

"Hold on, wait a minute," Carrie croaked weakly, her forehead creasing in confusion. "Who are you talking about...who's Austin?"

Lexie let out a small huff of laughter, thinking she hadn't heard Carrie right. "What?"

Carrie fell back weakly against the pillows, her head throbbing. "I don't know any Austin. And who are you, and why do you keep calling me Carrie?"

Lexie's smile died as she saw the true confusion in Carrie's eyes. "Oh, no," she whispered under her breath.

*************************************************

Mike rushed down the hallway, making a beeline for Carrie's room. He nearly crashed into Lexie as she emerged from the room.

"Lex, how is she? Is she all right?"

"Physically, she seems fine, but..."

Mike's shoulders sagged with relief. "Thank God. Can I see her?"

"Mike, I don't think that's a very good idea right now."

"Why not?" He tried to move past her, but Lexie quickly grabbed his arm, stopping him. "Lex, please."

"Mike, you shouldn't see her."

Mike tried to break her hold on his arm, his eyebrows knit together with a mixture of anger and confusion."Why??"

"Because she won't know who you are!" Lexie burst out desperately. Mike's head whipped around, confused, surprised blue eyes locking with Lexie's.

Lexie took a calming breath, swallowing hard before she continued. "She doesn't know who any of us are, Mike. Not me, not Marlena, not Roman, not even herself. She can't
remember."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Remember Me- Part 4
Marlena smiled reassuringly down at Carrie, laying a hand on her shoulder. "Oh, honey, I know this has got to be frustrating for you...but we're all just so glad you're all right."
Carrie nodded, looking down at her hands. "Physically I am, I guess." She looked back up at Marlena and Roman. "I just wish I could remember you two." Carrie let out a
frustrated sigh. "But right now, I can't remember a whole lot of anything."
Roman sat down on the bed beside Carrie, taking her hand in his. "Punkin, I know that this has got to be frustrating for you, but it will all come back to you in time."
"But what if it doesn't? I didn't know my own name, my husband's name, Dr. Carver...I can't even remember you, my own father!"
Roman pulled Carrie into a tight hug. "I promise you, sweetheart," he said finally, stroking her hair reassuringly, "We'll be here for you no matter what, okay?" Carrie nodded as
he stood. "We'll give you some time to get changed and get ready, and then we'll take you home."
Carrie waited until the door closed behind them. She pulled back the blankets, carefully swinging her legs over the side of the bed and heading toward the bathroom. She flipped
on the light switch--and was met by her own face staring back at her from the mirror. She studied her reflection for a long moment, her eyebrows knitting together in frustration.
"Who are you?"
*************************************************
Carrie jumped up from the couch, looking around the penthouse in complete boredom. She'd been out of the hospital for almost a week now, and she was beginning to get stir
crazy. She'd only had brief flashes of memory here and there since, and Carrie was dying to find some answers--and hopefully, begin to piece things back together.
Marlena came down the stairs, looking at Carrie with a worried expression. "Carrie, honey, are you all right?"
Carrie paused for a long moment, then turned to face Marlena. "No... I'm not. I need to get out of here and start trying to figure some of this stuff out."
"Have you remembered anything?"
Carrie shook her head. "Nothing except an occasional flash now and then." She came over to Marlena, taking her hands imploringly. "Marlena, I saw my name on a nameplate
outside an office at the hospital. It said I was the Head of Public Relations. Is that true?"
Marlena nodded. "Yes, it is, but..."
"Well, since my husband seems nowhere to be found, I think I should try remembering the rest of my life. I probably spent a lot of time at the hospital, right? I want to go
there--today. Maybe seeing my office, talking with some of the people I knew well on the staff could help trigger something--anything-- in my memory."
Marlena smiled. "Well, I can see I'm not going to be able to change your mind and get you to rest."
Carrie smiled victoriously and shook her head. "Nope."
Marlena sighed. "Well, all right then. We'll head over to the hospital right after we have breakfast."
*************************************************
Mike threw his pen down on his desk, leaning back in his chair. He propped his elbows on the arm rests, steepling his fingers. They hadn't allowed him to see Carrie, and he'd
felt too guilty to go over to Marlena's to try and see her anyway. He could get rid of the guilt of that night in his office. He'd been afraid to go after her, thinking he would only
cause her more pain than he already had. But when he heard that she'd had the accident, he kept badgering himself because he'd let her leave.
He chewed thoughtfully on his lip as his eyes fell on the phone. He reached for it hesitantly, then began dialing Marlena's number.
A soft knock sounded on his door, and Lexie stuck her head in. "Mike, are you busy?"
Mike sighed and reluctantly hung up the phone. "Not really. What's up?"
"Marlena just showed up..."
Mike nodded, raising his eyebrows. "Lex, the lady works here, y'know."
Lexie rolled her eyes. "I know that, smart aleck. But I thought you would like to know who's with her. It's Carrie."
*************************************************
Carrie's eyes scanned the hallway.
"Anything look familiar?"
Carrie shook her head, dismayed. "No."
Marlena smiled reassuringly. "Well, why don't we try your office? I've got the key for it right here..." They were interrupted by the office door behind them opening abruptly.
Carrie turned, finding herself staring into a pair of strangely familiar blue eyes.
"Oh, Mike, good morning." The handsome blond gave her a polite nod, yet his eyes never left Carrie's. Marlena seemed not to notice. "Carrie, this is the Chief of Staff of the
hospital, Mike Horton."
Carrie held out her hand, unable to look away from Mike's gaze as his hand enveloped hers. She blushed and quickly looked away. "I'm sorry, Dr. Horton, I didn't mean to
stare."
Mike smiled reassuringly. "No, that's okay. I understand. And, please, call me Mike." His smile widened. "We were never real formal with each other."
"Sure, okay...Mike."
Mike saw Marlena's glare, and realized he was still holding Carrie's hand. He pulled his hand back and cleared his throat uncomfortably. "Well, um...what brings you ladies here
this morning?"
Marlena continued to stare Mike down. "Carrie wanted to see her office. She was hoping it would help to jar her memory." Marlena's beeper went off, and she plucked it from
her purse with a sigh. "Carrie, honey, I'm sorry, but I'm afraid that will have to wait. That's a call I've been expecting from one of my colleagues."
"Marlena, I could stay with Carrie until you're through," Mike interjected nonchalantly. "I've got a few minutes."
Marlena hesitated for a moment before handing the key to Mike. "All right, I won't be long."
Carrie nodded as Marlena took off down the hall. She turned back to Mike. "Thanks, I appreciate it. But I'm sure you're really busy, and I don't want to be a bother to you..."
"Don't worry, it's no bother at all." Slow down, Mike, he warned himself. You can't let on about how you feel-at least not yet. "Besides," he added nonchalantly,"I'm not only
your boss, I'm your doctor. I'm supposed to help you get better, right?"
Carrie smiled thankfully as he put the key in her door, swinging it open and gesturing for her to go inside. "Thanks, Mike." She stepped inside, looking around her. "Wow... very
nice."
She trailed her fingers across the top of the desk. Her eyes came to rest on a silver hourglass. She picked it up, turning it over in her hands. "This is beautiful," she said softly.
Mike grinned. "I'm glad you like my taste."
She turned to look at him. "You gave this to me?"
Mike nodded. "The day you started this job. I told you it was to remind you not to work too many hours."
Carrie smiled, leaning back against the desk. "Yeah, you told me it wasn't brain surgery..." She stopped abruptly, Mike looking at her in surprise. "How did I remember that?"
Mike swallowed and looked at his feet for a moment, trying to regain his train of thought before looking back up at her. His voice was gentle. She remembered. "Little things
come back to you like that, just pieces..."
Carrie nodded and set down the hourglass. "Yeah, tell me about it. I've been getting small flashes of other stuff, too."
"Like what?"
"Well, like...family get-togethers with Marlena and Roman, holidays, little stuff like that. At least that's what I think they are, anyway. The image never really lasts long enough for
me to tell." She paused and looked up at him. "But, the funny thing is, I remember seeing your face a lot. That's why I was staring earlier. I had this feeling... like I knew you. Are
we friends?"
Mike nodded, swallowing hard as a soft smile tugged at his lips. "Yeah, we are, actually. Good friends. We've known each other since we were kids."
Carrie grinned. "Then that makes you the perfect person to help me out, doesn't it?"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Remember Me-Part 5

Carrie stopped in the middle of her office, putting her hands on her hips and shaking her head.

"Still nothin', huh?" Mike asked sympathetically.

Carrie sighed. "No. I've looked over every corner of this office, and nothing." She threw her hands up defeatedly, frowning in dismay. Suddenly her face brightened. "Mike, did
we spend a lot of time in your office?"

"Yeah, actually. We had to pull a lot of all nighters. As a matter of fact, I think you spent more time in my office than yours."

"Really?" Carrie's eyebrows rose. "Can I see it?"

"Yeah, sure. Come with me."

*************************************************

Mike held the door open for her, then closed it behind them. "Go ahead and look around."

Carrie smiled her thanks, turning to inspect the room. Her fingertips brushed the arm of the overstuffed couch as she moved toward his bookshelves. Medical journals lined each
shelf, along with some framed photos. Carrie picked one up of her and Mike. "Where was this one taken?"

"We went to a medical convention in L.A. together about a year back, before you started working here at the hospital." Mike laughed at her puzzled expression. "Believe me, it's
a long story."

Carrie looked back down at the picture, running her fingers over it. "It looks like we were having a great time."

A gentle smile touched his lips. "Yeah..we had a wonderful time," he answered softly.

Carrie put the photo back on the shelf, looking carefully about her. She approached his desk, her hand resting on its smooth surface.

"We shouldn't be doing this...but God help me, I want you so much..."

Carrie's shoulders jerked, her eyes opening wide with surprise as the image of a shirtless Mike crushing her against him flashed before her. She froze in shock, unable to move.

"Carrie?" Huge eyes went to Mike's, a look of concern in their blue depths of his.

Another memory of those same eyes flashed before her, but they weren't filled with concern. Only one word came to Carrie's mind at the memory of the spark she'd seen
there--heat.

"Carrie? Are you all right?" he reached out, touching her arm.

Carrie felt the blood rushing up her neck, her face going hot at his touch. She stared at him for a long moment, unable to speak. "I..."

She was cut off by Marlena's knock at the door. "Sorry, honey. That took a little longer than I expected. Are you ready to go?"

"Um... yeah, sure. Thanks, Mike," she said quickly, almost running out of the office after Marlena, pulling the door shut behind her with a loud bang.

Mike looked at the closed door, his forehead creased in stunned confusion. "What the..."

Remember Me-Part 6

Carrie headed up to her room as soon as they arrived back at the penthouse. She leaned back against the door, letting out a sigh of relief. Carrie raised a shaky hand to tuck a
loose strand of hair behind her ear as the memory flashed before her again...

God help me, I want you so much.....

The words echoed in Carrie's ears as she straightened, staring blankly out in front of her. She blushed fiercely as the image of her and Mike came back to her, a sudden surge of
longing making her legs feel weak. She expelled a deep breath. "Where the heck did that come from?" Carrie wrapped her arms around herself, staring off into space. "And is it
real?"

*************************************************

Marlena watched Carrie at the dinner table the next night as she fidgeted with her water glass, staring off into space as she picked uninterestedly at her food. "Carrie, you've
seemed a bit on edge ever since we left the hospital yesterday. Is something wrong? Did something happen while you were there?"

You could say that, Carrie thought, laying down her fork. "I just have a lot to sort through in my head, I guess." She took her napkin out of her lap and laid it on the table.
"Marlena, did I have some certain kind of way that I used to relax or think?"

"Well, I think you always used to enjoy a good run when you got the chance."
Carrie stood and nodded, contemplating the idea. "A run does sound like a good idea. My head's too full to eat, anyway. You don't mind, do you?"

She smiled. "Of course not, sweetie. You go ahead and do whatever you have to."

Carrie smiled and leaned over, giving her a quick kiss on the cheek. "Thanks, Marlena. I won't be gone long." She bounded up the stairs to change into some sweats.

******************************************************************

The late afternoon air was brisk, even a bit cool for May, but Carrie didn't seem to mind. She jogged her way down the block, finding the archway to the park that Marlena had
told her about. The stone steps stretched up to the walkway above, some other souls sharing Carrie's idea sprinting steadily above her. Carrie slowed a bit, taking it all in.

CRASH!!!

Carrie was nearly knocked off her feet as she collided with another jogger, and felt strong hands go to her shoulders, steadying her. "I'm so sorry..."

"No problem. You okay?"

"Yeah, sorry. I wasn't watching where I was..." She halted mid-sentence as her eyes went to the other jogger's face. "Mike, hey! What are you doing here so early?"

"I was stuck in meetings a majority of the day, but luckily, my last one got out early." He grinned down at her. "I didn't expect to see you out here."

"Marlena said I used to go for a jog when I needed to clear my head, and so I figured I'd give it a try."

Mike nodded his understanding. "You wanna take a break?" he asked, gesturing toward the bench behind them.
"I'd kinda like to talk to you a minute."

Carrie shrugged and smiled. "Sure. What did you want to talk to me about?"

"Well, I was sorta worried about you earlier. You left my office awfully fast, and you didn't look so good."
"Yeah, I'm sorry about that. I didn't mean to worry you."

"No, no, that's all right. I just wanted to make sure you were okay. You just all of the sudden got this look on your face like something really gave you a good shock. Did you
remember something that bothered you?"

That depends on your definition of 'bothered', Carrie thought silently. "It wasn't that big of a deal. I really didn't have time to tell what it was, actually. I guess I was just
surprised because of a memory breaking through."

Mike nodded, but Carrie could tell by the look on his face that he didn't believe her. He didn't say anything, though, and pulled her to her feet. "Well, I'll tell you what, Brady. I
haven't been out here that long, and you don't seem very winded. How 'bout a little race?"

Carrie raised an eyebrow. "Race, huh? I don't know, Doctor... think you're up to it?"

Mike wiggled his eyebrows and grinned. "You'd better believe it. Last one out to the other end of the park buys the ice cream."

Carrie hopped to her feet. "You're on." They leaned down into a runner's stance. "Okay...on your marks, get set..." Carrie took off in a swift sprint, getting about a yard's head
start on Mike. "GO!" She called over her shoulder.

"Hey! No fair!!" Mike took off after her, finally catching her a few feet short of the finish line. He grabbed her from behind, pulling her to the ground with him. They tumbled to the
grass, finally rolling to a stop. Mike grinned down at her. "What, you think... you need to cheat to beat me now?" he managed, still out of breath.

" 'Course not. I...just figured I'd better win...because I don't have...any money with me," she answered, taking in gulps of air.

"Oh, so you made a bet and weren't gonna be able to pay up, huh? Well, since we don't know who would've won, I think it's only fair that we call it a draw."

"Okay." Mike helped her to her feet. "But I hope that means that you'll still buy the ice cream."

Mike shook his head, grinning. "I suppose I could do that. But don't forget--you owe me a fair race."

Carrie laughed as she followed behind him.
