Anguish – Part One

This is just a little story that’s been swirling around in my head. What would have happened if Carrie had seen Mike
on the rooftop when he returned from Israel? This is a different take on the sunset. Enjoy! - LMS

Mike couldn’t believe what he was hearing. Austin and Carrie had just said that they’d always love each other. At
that precise moment Mike’s heart shattered. He had such high hopes on his return from Israel. He had planned to rush
into her arms, tell he was sorry for leaving her, that her he loved her, that he missed her like crazy, hear her say she
loved him, and then, he had planned to get down on one knee and ask her to be his bride. But that wasn’t going to
happen. Not now. Not after what he just heard. He glanced back down to the velvet box that contained the diamond
ring he had planned on proposing with, shut the lid and sighed. His dreams of being with Carrie forever were over. He
knew that now. But in mourning his loss, he had sighed heavily, and Carrie who was embracing Austin, peaked
around Austin’s shoulder at the sound. Her eyes opened wide in astonishment and her arms immediately dropped
from Austin’s shoulders.

“Oh my God. Mike!” Her exclamation was softly spoken, as she found it hard to believe that the love of her life had
returned. Everything, at that moment, became surreal. The events that followed seemed to take hours, but actually
happened in a matter of seconds.

Mike had heard her softly call his name and was immediately wrapped in panic. Being discovered by them with their
arms wrapped around each other was bad enough, but the last thing he needed now was to hear Carrie tell him she
was back with Austin. He never wanted to hear those words from her mouth, even if they were true. He didn’t want
to look up, but he knew he had to. He decided he needed to say something quick and then get the hell out of there
before he fell apart.

Austin turned around to see what Carrie was looking at beyond his shoulders. He was almost as shocked to see Mike
as Carrie was. He looked back at Carrie’s face. He could not deny the love he saw in Carrie’s eyes as she looked at
Mike. Any doubt he ever had about her love for Mike was erased right then and there. He turned his head back
towards Mike, waiting for Mike to say something.

Mike awkwardly looked towards Carrie and Austin. He had interrupted their private moment. He struggled trying to
get his mouth to speak the words, any words. He looked directly into Carrie’s eyes and her eyes were transfixed on
his. But she didn’t see love in those blue eyes as she usually did. All she saw now was extreme hurt and pain.
Anguish. She could see tears beginning to form in his eyes as he struggled valiantly to keep himself composed. She
knew Mike had miss-read what was going on between her and Austin, but she couldn’t find her voice to say anything.
Finally Mike spoke. “I’m…I’m…I’m sorry…I didn’t mean to interrupt……….I’m sorry.”

As Mike backed up towards the door to make a quick exit, he struggled to get the ring box back into his pocket. Not
really paying attention to what he was doing, the velvet box never made it back to it’s original hiding place, as it fell
almost silently to the floor. Mike never heard it hit the floor as he had already made his hasty retreat through the door
that led to Carrie’s rooftop. He ran down the apartment steps with tears streaming down his face, the heartbreak
overwhelming him. He had left all his dreams and the love of his life right there on the roof with another man.

Carrie didn’t move. She didn’t know what to do. She just stared at the spot where Mike had just been standing a few
seconds ago. It was as if she thought if she stared at it long enough, Mike would magically reappear and she could
explain everything.

Austin saw the little box hit the floor, but never had the chance to stop him. Mike had left just as quickly as he had
appeared. Austin walked over to the box and picked it up off the ground. His movement brought Carrie out of her
trance.

“What is that?”

“I don’t know. Mike dropped it as he left.” He looked at the box and suspected he knew what was inside. He
opened it and his suspicions were confirmed. Inside was a very large emerald cut diamond ring flanked by baguettes
on each side. Mike certainly had spared no expense. “Wow. This must have cost Mike a fortune.”

Carrie’s curiosity moved her towards Austin. She looked in the open box held in Austin’s hand. Her mouth dropped
open as she gasped. She now realized not only had Mike come back from Israel, but it looked as though he had
intended on asking her to marry him. The magnitude of the pain Mike must be feeling right now hit her like a
steamroller. “Oh..my..God!”

“Yeah, I’ll say. Mike must have spent a boat load on this ring.”

Carrie couldn’t believe what Austin had just said. “Austin, who cares what he spent. Don’t you get it?” Austin looked
dumbfounded. Carrie sighed. “How do you think Mike feels right now finding us in each other’s arms? Didn’t you see
his face? I’ve never seen him so upset before. Oh my God and this ring. Austin, do you think Mike was going to
propose to me tonight?”

“I don’t know Carrie. Maybe he was. I mean this certainly looks like an engagement ring, but maybe it was his way of
apologizing for treating you so bad. Look, Carrie, I know you’re upset, but you can’t blame yourself. You didn’t
know he was coming back. He never even contacted you.” Austin looked at a very distraught Carrie and surmised
that no matter what he said, she would not be consoled. He handed Carrie the box with the ring in it. “Here, take this
and go and find him. You can explain everything. You know he’ll listen. He always has, hasn’t he?”

“Yeah, he did always listened to me, even if I was hurting him, he still always listened. Thanks, Austin. And thanks for
tonight. For understanding and for forgiving me.”

“Sure. I hope it all works out for you.”

“Yeah, me too.” And with that Carrie was out the door and on her way to try and find Mike.
