Reminder of the society rules:-
1. Committee make the rules
2. Refer to rule 1

In my opinion you should turn up and play the game to shoot the best score you can. The society is about playing golf and having a craic not throwing shots to preserve handicaps.
What if someone does this ahead of the COC and takes the manor house prize by a shot - is that fair if you are the one beaten?
Lets keep things honest and not get too serious about it.
