Pageant crowns Miss Hollywood
A band of beauties converged in Hollywood on the pageant path to Miss Universe.

Beaming bright smiles and with perfect figures fitted into elegant evening gowns, 19 of South Florida's prettiest young women competed last week for the titles Miss Hollywood USA and Miss Hollywood Teen USA.
''I want to break the stereotype of what a pageant winner can be,'' said Lindsay Shockey, 22, of Miami.
And she did.
More than 6 feet tall in spike heels, the Florida State University graduate towered over other contestants, wore dental braces, donned exactly the same gown as pageant co-host Miss Florida USA Kristen Berset, and flashed a ''rock-on'' hand sign during her first walk as Miss Hollywood USA 2006.
Donna Biederman, one of three pageant co-directors from the Hollywood Jaycees, which produced and presented the event at the Hollywood Beach Culture and Community Center, said winners wear the 2006 titles because the pageant was a preliminary to a series of contests leading up to Miss Universe in 2006.
''The winners, and some runners-up, now qualify for the Miss Florida USA leading to the Miss USA pageant and eventually Miss Universe 2006,'' Biederman said.
Shockey and the newest Miss Hollywood Teen USA, Diana Crawford, 16, of Davie, also crowned at the Sunday night event, will represent Hollywood through 2006.
Producing the pageant is the latest and most ambitious project in recent history for the 60-year-old Hollywood Jaycees business networking and civic service organization.
Biederman said the group launched the first Miss Hollywood in nearly three decades last year on a shoe-string budget at the Jaycees Hall clubhouse, 2930 Hollywood Blvd.
This year, Biederman and co-directors Misty Maaya and Debra Gronvold enlisted professional decorators for the 300-seat beachside art and culture center, solicited dozens of sponsors and sold tickets to the upscale affair. Dozens of Jaycees volunteered their expertise and time.
Member Jackye Clayton, who is a member of the group's first-place national debate team, said the club provides an interesting list of personal development workshops from how to write a résumé to salsa dancing.
Violet Nikolici, the organization's business vice president, said the group regularly hosts social events for Lincoln Manor, a home for the mentally challenged in Hollywood, and participates in civic events including Night Out Against Crime.
Today, the club will show up in Halloween costumes to entertain children at the Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital in Hollywood and tonight they will hand out candy and other treats to kids at a Halloween party at Jefferson Park, 15th Avenue and Jefferson Street.
