I am more than a little upset at the severe moderation on the other FL messageboard. I do not understand why different (NON BASHING) opinions cannot be freely and nicely given. I'd love to have a place to visit and chat about our pageants, but see that many of these posts are old and am wondering if this board is still active. Certainly there are MANY others that must be as frustrated as I am, so why not move to this or another board? Can we liven this place up a little, or do we have the same problem here?

Just to Clarify Statement

In the second to last paragraph of the below statement I wrote that I really hope that people take the time to read what we were saying in order to understand where we are coming from. Well obviously with all of the (yet again) negative responses we are getting, we didn't explain ourselves to the best of our ability. Instead of spelling everything out there was a little room for interpretation. So, I would like to explain exactly what we meant in paragraph 10 of the below statement regarding the Top 15 and also paragraph 17 and the fun level.

I never said the pageant wasn't fun! Quite the contrary. The pageant is set up to be a fun, amazing experience; Tel-Air runs it that way. They make all of their contestants feel like stars and trust me I know that first hand! We model (and have always modeled) our pageant directly off of what I've learned as a contestant in THEIR pageants. What I did notice this year is that a lot of the girls (again compared to when I competed) where so focused on the things you can't control (like other contestants) they didn't enjoy their time at the pageant as much as they could or should have. Angela and I feel that this is because the preliminary system is promoting (via gossip and message boards) heightened levels of anticipation and expectation, causing some tension within the pageant. Obviously those who are truly prepared for the pageant probably wouldn't even notice.

The Top 15...Judges will typically gravitate to the person they feel the most comfortable with. The teen top 15 was a little off, I'm sorry but I don't know what those judges were thinking with SOME of their choices. Personally there were 4 contestants in particular in the top 15 that blew me away, I think they did an amazing job and hands down deserved to be there. Nakia, who did make the semi-finals, is an amazing young women who I think will go very far in the Miss division. She is a great titleholder and I truly adore her but truth be told she was reluctant to embrace what we teach; she went off of her past pageant coaching rather than our pageant coaching. So, our statement was more directed toward her placement in comparison with our other girls placement. Obviously we wanted to avoid posting that in a statement about our own titleholder and tried to leave the reference vague. So again, to clarify, the judges were looking for something we do not and will not teach because what we teach didn't make the Top 15!. For Nakia to make the 15 and not Tiffany, Heather or Kendra (who is the poster child for what we teach) made us question WHAT WE TEACH versus what the judges are looking for. This is in no way meant to be an insult to Nakia, Victoria, or any of the other contestants.

I hope that this will help to clear some things up. Again if you have questions regarding anything we've posted please e-mail us at info@missdaytonabeachteen.com

Subject: Angela & Kim, You will be missed. It is sad when anyone chooses to leave the system...for everyone. You guys are great and so are your queens. But I would also like to add that although, I can understand your reasons for leaving, I do have to disagree with you about something. My daughter was a contestant in the state pageant and she had fun! In fact, she was surprised at how much fun she had. She did not think it would be as much fun as it was. And she told me this on the phone before finals nite, so it had nothing to do with where she did or did not place in the pageant. However, she did make the finals and she was very natural and very much herself! So I really don't understand that part of what you wrote. But I do wish you well and hope to see you and your queens back at state!

Date Posted: 23:32:56 10/26/04 Tue

The scoring system can be confusing if you are used to a point system. If there are going to be 12 semi-finalist, then the judges are told to circle their 12 favorite girls in each category. The 12 girls with the most circles from SS, EG, and interview are the semi-finalist. Then, the judges are told to pick thier favorite 5 out of the twelve to advance to the finalist. Once the finalist are chosen, the judges then rank the girls from the favorite to the least favorite of the top five. Different point amounts are awarded for each spot. I think it is like this and if not exactly it is very close to this: Winner-5 pts., 1st-3, 2nd-2, 3rd-1 and 4th-.5. For instance, if 3 judges put a girl to win and two put her as 4th, she would have 16 points. If 2 judges picked a girl to win and the other 3 judges had her as 1st runner-up, she would have a total score of 19 and would be the winner even though the other contestant received more winning votes.

Subject: Queen for a Day needs your help with tiaras!

Author:
Jenna Edwards, Miss Florida 2004 (MAO)
[ Edit | View ]

Date Posted: 23:44:22 10/22/04 Fri

I am writing to solicit tiara donations for Queen for a Day and the pageant community has always been supportive. The good news is we are growing rapidly with new chapters all over the country and our current chapters are increasing activity with more parties. The bad news is we are not bringing in enough tiaras to support the demand. I am making a plea to anyone with extra crowns to please donate them to Queen for a Day. Even MAO titleholders can send their extra local prelim crowns to us. For instance, I only have 2 prelim crowns. I'm keeping one for a keepsake and I'm donating the other to QFAD. We are in desperate need of tiaras so any help, no matter how seemingly insignificant, is greatly appreciated.

Queen for a Day is a 501C3 non-profit organization for seriously and terminally ill pediatric patients. So many times, illness hurts a patient psychologically more than physically. Children forget to be kids and resort to the isolation the disease offers as the alternative. When QFAD comes to the hospital, we give the patients a reason to be a kid again. We host tea parties for girls to be pampered with makeovers, manicures, and their very own coronation ceremony. Each patient receives a real tiara donated by queens across the nation! When a child looks in the mirror after her makeover and smiles, she has pushed down her illness. When they giggle and prance around the room wearing tiaras on bald heads, they beat down their illness. The Queen for a Day crown symbolizes victory as they are champions over their illness.

At our events, bald cancer patients come in with pale skin and apprehensive expressions. By the time they leave, they have smiling bright red lips, blushing cheeks, energy in their step and a crown donning their hairless head. They walk in clutching their IV pole. They walk away with their shoulders thrown back and their head held high, leaving the nurses to handle the IV pole.

For the boys, we encourage the qualities of bravery and courage through the Heroes program based on firefighters and police officers. We invite local heroes to attend the event to tell heroic stories and develop a friendship with the patients. Patients receive firefighter hats, badges, and other hero-themed gifts.

For four years, QFAD has operated and developed into 33 chapters in the U.S. and 8 in South Africa. We have been featured on the Oprah Winfrey Show twice and in People Magazine. Oprah’s Angel Network donated $10,000 in supplies in April 2001. Companies such as Ford Motor Company, the Miss America Organization, Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, Tony and Tina cosmetics, and Clinique cosmetics have supported QFAD as well.

Visit our website at www.qfad.org for information. Thank you so much!

Subject: AP Article - Miss America and ABC part ways.....

Author:
Very Sad Day for Pageanty
[ Edit | View ]

Date Posted: 21:16:44 10/20/04 Wed

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) - ABC has dropped Miss America, leaving the famous beauty pageant without a TV outlet for the first time in 50 years.

The network, which had carried the annual telecast since 1997 with a series of one-year contracts, notified Miss America Organization officials that they will not pick up the option this year, the pageant's acting president and CEO, Arthur McMaster, said Wednesday.

"We are now free to pursue other parties who have expressed interest in our organization, and we are excited at the limitless opportunities that are now available for us to grow our brand," he said.

The move, which comes after the Sept. 18 pageant drew a record low 9.8 million viewers, could jeopardize the foundation of a program that grew from an Atlantic City publicity stunt into a highly rated TV staple, largely on the strength of the contest and crowning beamed into millions of living rooms each September.

Since Lee Meriwether was crowned on Sept. 11, 1954, in the first televised pageant, Miss America has grown into a nonprofit corporation that makes available more than $40 million annually in scholarship aid and oversees 52 local pageants.

But the pageant's appeal to potential contestants, sponsors and fans hinges on the annual TV show, a live event whose glittery gowns, hokey talent acts and girl-next-door crownings fueled the fantasies of little girls for years.

Without network television to provide those images, Miss America faces an uncertain future.

"It's certainly an ominous sign," said former chief executive officer Leonard Horn. "Whether or not they can get a contract with another network is going to be very important."

ABC officials didn't immediately respond to requests for comment.

ABC, which took over Miss America after 30-year sponsor NBC lost interest in 1996, has had rocky relations with Miss America officials in recent years, in part because of sinking ratings.

McMaster, who had pressed the network to move Miss America to a weeknight and televise some part of its three nights of preliminary competition, said the pageant was happy to part ways with ABC.

"There's already been companies that have contacted us and expressed an interest," he said. "This thing's been around for 84 years and it'll be around for another 84. I'm not going to say I'm not worried, but I think there's much more out there."

The loss of its network sponsor deals the Miss America Organization a financial blow, too. In 2003, ABC paid $5.6 million for the rights to televise it.

"There's no doubt, TV is the catalyst that keeps this company going. But it's not a one-night-a-year organization. It's a 52-weeks-a-year organization. We want to grow beyond that one night," said McMaster.

Pageant officials believe that on a weeknight, Miss America would draw more viewers and reach young people more likely to be out than watching television on Saturday nights, when the contest airs.

"I don't think it'll be a problem for a cable network to pick it up. There's a lot of niche networks that would pick it up because it's such a familiar brand," said Brad Adgate, senior vice president of research for Horizon Media, a media services company. "I could see them turning this into some form of reality show, where you stretch it over a few nights, these personalities become a little more familiar and you get to know them."

He said it was unlikely that CBS, NBC or Fox would televise Miss America, which has three telecasts in the Nielsen ratings' top 100 of all time (all in the early, mid-'60s).

Shari Anne Brill, director of programming for ad-buying firm Carat, said a women-oriented network like Lifetime or Oxygen might want Miss America, but the pageant will still be hard-pressed to compete with reality TV shows.

"It used to be that these pageants were much bigger events, because that's all there was. Now, you have 'The Swan,' 'America's Top Model' and all these reality competitions going on. With those type of shows, the viewer has more of a chance to connect than watching someone from some state in a sash and a bathing suit," Brill said.

WARNING: This is a post containing an honest opinion! While meant to be informative and helpful, it is only the opinion of the poster and in no way should be taken as fact or expertise!

I will first do the 15 (minus the top 5) in the order they were called:

Lauren Lecompte

Lauren is a very pretty girl and had a good onstage interveiw. Found her gown and ss presentation very safe. She looked exactly like she looked last year and I thought she went with the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" mentallity. However, it was a very strong year, and I just don't think she had enough stage presence to make the next cut. Young though, and can come back next year with more energy and be a real contender!

Beautiful, tall, very fit girl! Great in ss, onstage interview was just ok to me, and gown was a bit mature on top, but she did have great stage presence and I think she will do very well when she moves on up to the miss division!

Alyx Reynolds

Very pretty, very well spoken girl despite her young age. Was one of the youngest to make this cut. Wore a different gown for prelims than for finals. Did not care for either gown. The first one washed her out and the second looked like co-ed. Great swimsuit figure. Something missing here, though. Maybe needs more "umph!!" Again, a very safe performance. But walked away with a deserving photogenic award!

Lauren Dickenson

This girl came from out of nowhere! Even though she was a prelim winner, she was hardly mentioned pre-pageant, and her gown was a little prom-ish, BUT she had an extremely pretty, fresh-looking, teen face! Don't know her age or if she can come back, but with the right help, could definately shine!

Tiffany Terrell

This girl is just very pretty and very well spoken. Probably was very close to the top 5! Thought she looked a bit mature, especially in her gown (although I thought the gown was pretty, she can use it when she moves up to Miss) She had worked hard on her figure and was fit, but still needed something.

Shantavia Davis

I thought this girl had a sweetness to her and a very pretty face. I liked her hair better when she wore it down and I think she just needs more experience and confidence on stage. Another young one though, and I expect to see her back stronger next year!

Noelle Stevens

Very, very well spoken girl. I think her interview skills are what put her into top 15. Cute opening number outfit, but was my least favorite gown. And needs to work on her walk. Something just a little off there.

Stephanie Camp

Can you say cute????!!! This girl is a doll and really bubbled on stage, however, there was a little uneasiness in interview and although I LOVED her gown, it kept wrapping around her feet, which was very distracting. Gotta give her credit though, she never once tripped or got frustrated with it, she just kept going. I look for her to come back very strong next year!

Sara Long

This girl was just gorgeous. Face and body got her into top 15 for sure!! Needs some work on onstage interview. But definately one of the prettiest in the competition!

Brenda Orcutt

Another very pretty girl and another one I think was right up there close to the top 5. Gown was one of my favorites, interview was good despite a bad question, but needs work in ss. I also expect to see her back stronger next year!

TOP 5

4th Runner Up - Kimberly Wright

Very good onstage interview! Didn't care for the gown, thought it overpowered her, and she made a few mistakes in prelims that may have cost her a little. Good ss figure and very pretty smile!

2rd Runner Up - Tatianna Schoeppler

Very beautiful exotic looking girl! In my opinion, needed work in ss and the gown was a bit mature, but gave a great interview and had great energy on stage! Can't wait to see her in the Miss divsion next year!

2nd Runner Up - Heather Mowry

Could not find a finals picture of Heather in gown on the Florida Teen site, so I pulled one off her site, because this girl was one of my favorites in ss! In fact she was one of my favorites, period. If it wasn't for a weak onstage interview, I think she could have won. Great personality on stage and since she is the only one who can return out of the top 5, I look for her to be a major contender next year.

1st Runner Up - Aimee Seheult

Very pretty face and was very well spoken. Thought she needed work in ss but her presentation was very good. Wish her luck with her Co-ed title and with Miss division next year!

Winner- Victoria Ratliff

Very very pretty winner! Loved her gown, gave a good answer in interview and looked thin and fit! A great example of a girl who won because she made no mistakes!

So there you have it, like it or not, those are my opinions and I hope the girls find them useful instead of offensive, because that is how they are meant!

I see crowns on the head of Sarah Long, don't know how she missed top 5? I go strictly on beauty, Victoria would have been right up there for me too! we need to start thinking about this at state level and I do Believe Victoria will do Very well. But this Long girl has the it factor, How old and how tall?

The New Miss Florida USA Qualifying Rules (cut & pasted directly from the newsletter)
To qualify for this year’s Miss Florida USA Pageant delegates will have to compete in a local preliminary pageant. From each pageant the winner(s) will have a full paid entry into state. The automatic entries will be based on participation.
02-14 delegates per category: 1 entry
15-29 delegates per category: 2 entries
30+ delegates per category: 3 entries

AT LARGE DELEGATES:

To qualify as an “at-large” or paying delegate you have to be a finalist (top 5-6) in a local preliminary pageant. Also qualifying for state are local Miss Amity and Miss Photogenic award winners. The past seasons top 15 from state as well as state’s Miss Amity and Miss Photogenic winners have qualified. Past Miss Florida Teen USA and Miss Florida MAO winners also have automatic qualification.

Hi Giselle,
I apologize for not getting back to you sooner. I just read the guestbook on my company's site and responded right away! Hope you survived the hurricanes alright.

I'm getting very excited about Miss USA, however I've had very little time to prepare so far. Of course I have until February or March, so I think I'll be okay :)

XXX...yes...I know them. I love the flooring mosaics they create. A friend of mine has worked with them on several projects. Her name is XXXX with Designers West (interior design firm in Orlando). Maybe you have worked with her.

The stone industry is very interesting, as you know. The competition is tremendous, especially in South Florida. I've tried to concentrate on sales in North Florida because there aren't as many granite suppliers up there...therefore we don't have to try as hard to be competitive on our pricing!

It's nice to hear I have support out there. Please let me know if there is anything I can do for you. And if you still have any contacts at XXXX, I would love to be put in touch with them. We may be able to compliment each other's businesses.

THANKS and have a wonderful week,
Melissa Witek
