A music scene special report from the . .

THE TOP 25 :

8. SHARON CUNETA, Singer and Actress

I CELEBRITY v CONTENT € POLITICS
In an industry notorious for the proverbial "15 minutes of fame,"
the megastar has managed to stay on top of her career for the past
25 years. Sharon has lived out most of her private fortunes and
misfortunes in public, a fact that has endeared her even more to
fans and ordinary viewers alike. Like FPJ, Sharon's track record of
box-office hits and stellar album sales have given her leverage in
negotiations with producers, network executives, and advertisers and
have earned for her the distinction of the most sought after and
highest paid celebrity endorser.

9. GILBERTO DUAVIT JR., Executive Vice President and Head of
Programming, GMA

v CONTENT ΅ DISTRIBUTION « STAR MAKER € POLITICS
Jimmy Duavit's name is often confused with his father's: Gualberto
Duavit, the congressman who with Jimenez and Gozon bought the then
bankrupt Channel 7 from Bob Stewart in the 1970's. The younger
Duavit first stepped out of his father's shadow after co-producing
the critically acclaimed debut title for GMA films, "Jose Rizal."
Despite his youth, Jimmy Duavit is now in charge of developing new
programming for the network and overseeing the production of GMA's
highly publicized telenovelas - the station's big budget gamble to
topple its main rival ABS-CBN from primetime leadership.

10. JOHNNY MANAHAN, Managing Director, ABS-CBN Talent Center

« STAR MAKER
Johnny Manahan has institutionalized the star-making business by
coming up with an idea for a school where boys and girls with dreams
of stardom can train to be the next generation of actors, singers,
and models. Successful graduates make it to the Star Circle -
polished products funneled into the various films and programs of
ABS-CBN. Manahan's Center provides the network with a steady stream
of talents some of whom, like the late Rico Yan, Claudine Barretto,
Jericho Rosales, and Jolina Magdangal, became top-tier stars.

11. DOUGLAS QUIJANO, Talent manager

« STAR MAKER
Douglas Quijano has a sharp eye for spotting raw and young talent
and molding them into screen idols. That's what he did with the
likes of Richard Gomez and Jomari Yllana. Quijano is foremost an
image-maker, and he uses that experience to carefully shape his
talents into sophisticated sex symbols programmed to sell anything
from movie tickets to underwear. With the transfer of most of his
talents to GMA, he is also actively involved in the
conceptualization and casting of programs there.

12. BOY ABUNDA, Host, publicist and talent manager

« STAR MAKER I CELEBRITY
As the co-host of the most watched entertainment talk show, you can
trust Boy Abunda to create buzz from even the most banal of news
items. After all, Abunda is a high profile publicist and generating
hype is his business. He is influential because he is what PR
specialists call a "connector:" a person who not only knows a lot of
people, but even more important than that, knows the right people.
True enough, he has no enemies - only contacts - and his Rolodex of
clients and friends contains the names of the most powerful
politicians and celebrities in the country.

13. LOLIT SOLIS, Host and talent manager

« STAR MAKER I CELEBRITY
After the Metro Filmfest Scam of several years ago, many expected
Lolit Solis to fade away from showbiz as quickly as her talent,
Gabby Concepcion, did. But unlike Concepcion, Solis has managed to
weather the storm and leverage her clout to stage a spectacular
comeback - signing up A-list stars like Lorna Tolentino, Rudy
Fernandez, and Ramon 'Bong' Revilla Jr. Solis has even capitalized
on her notoriety to establish herself as a gossip show host. Lolit
Solis has been known to do anything that will advance the careers of
her talents. She also sticks to them in good times and bad - which
is why those stars keep signing up with her.

14. DEO EDRINAL, Talent manager and program consultant

v CONTENT « STAR MAKER
Edrinal is among just a handful of talent managers with the power to
cast talents in the programs they create. As program consultant for
ABS-CBN, he has been able to tailor formats to suit his stable of
stars like Kris Aquino, Pops Fernandez, and Diether Ocampo. Though
this practice has made his talents happy, it has also raised the
eyebrows of his colleagues in the industry. Conflict of interest? No
one dares complain. Now that's power.

15. RICKY LO, Entertainment editor, Philippine Star

v CONTENT « STAR MAKER I CELEBRITY
Lo is the final word in showbiz gossip and it isn't fact until he
confirms it. That's the kind of influence he has over the
entertainment community and the general public. He does have his
share of misses, but for Lo, even a denial is news. There may be
more than 300 showbiz writers in Manila alone, but what sets Lo
apart is his ability to connect across classes. Lo has elevated
gossip and made it acceptable, even fashionable, to the social
elite, and used this clout to command exclusives and scoops from
producers, celebrities. and talent managers eager for the attention
of his readers.

A music scene special report from the . .
Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism (PCIJ)

THE TOP 25 :

16. LEA SALONGA, International actress and singer

v CONTENT I CELEBRITY
Lea Salonga is the only Filipina to make it in Broadway and
Hollywood at the same time. A Tony award winner for her performance
in the musical "Miss Saigon," Lea has penetrated U.S. primetime
television with a role in the award-winning hit show "E.R." Sold out
concerts and stage plays greet every homecoming performance of the
biggest star the country has produced.

17. LIZA GOKONGWEI, Publisher, Summit Publishing

v CONTENT « STAR MAKER ΅ DISTRIBUTION
The second daughter of taipan John Gokongwei has used her passion
for publishing to bring the glamor of media into the family's
conservative business empire. Her magazines FHM, Preview,
Cosmopolitan, and YES, are best sellers in their respective markets
and exposure on the covers and pages of these publications are
sought after by talent managers everywhere. Summit Publishing is a
marketing success story that proves again that a cleverly packaged
mix of celebrity hype, glamor, skin, and gossip can deliver the
demographics advertisers look for.

18. VENUS NAVALTA, Managing director, Universal McCaan

l MONEY
Navalta is the only person on the list least associated with the
world of the stars. But as top honcho of the biggest media buying
company in the country, she spends over P3.5 billion in ads each
year — about enough to keep the entertainment industry alive.
Sophisticated research tools introduced by media buyers like Navalta
have changed the rules of mass-market programming and have sent
publishers and producers scrambling for niche-market products to
offer. Today buyers are less impressed with general ratings and
circulation figures and are more interested in reaching specific
target markets to give their clients more bang for their advertising
buck.

19. MARILEN DINGLASAN, Chairperson, Movie and TV Review
Classification Board

€ POLITICS
Little is known about Marilen Dinglasan among industry insiders
except for her brief stint in a show band and an equally short-lived
role in the defunct "Gloria Labandera" campaign. While her
credentials as an artist are questionable, her proximity to
President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo isn't. By invoking the moral
responsibility of the State, the president's classmate at the
conservative Assumption Convent has the power to ban, cut, and send
producers and artists packing.

20. MANUEL PANGILINAN, CEO, Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co.

v CONTENT ΅ DISTRIBUTION
The telecoms boss knows compelling content is at the center of his
convergence strategy. Without it, PLDT's huge investments in
satellite and mobile technology and fiber optic networks are
impressive but empty pipelines. Pangilinan's strategy is to get
music, video, games, and news onto the cell phones and computers of
subscribers. The aborted purchase of a stake in GMA last year would
have created the country's best-positioned media company, but with
cash flow problems, Pangilinan is content to maximize his existing
properties like NBC radio and MTV Philippines.

21. HENRY SY, Mall magnate

΅ DISTRIBUTION l MONEY
Retail and real-estate taipan Henry Sy has turned his shoe stores
into the integrated entertainment complexes of the present. SM malls
nationwide are the largest movie theater network, but more than
that, they are the Pinoy equivalent of the Disney theme parks: a one-
stop shop for gaming, dining, shopping, concerts, sports, and just
plain malling — the ultimate three-dimensional entertainment
experience.

22. DANTE ANG, Chairman, IBC Network

v CONTENT ΅ DISTRIBUTION € POLITICS
As personal publicist and emissary of President Arroyo, Ang has gone
beyond manipulating the presidential image to influencing content
that comes out of government- owned broadcasting networks. He now
heads the third most-watched television station and has used his
closeness to the president to command the attention of industry
players.

23. RAMON REVILLA JR., Actor and chairman, Video Regulatory Board

v CONTENT I CELEBRITY € POLITICS
Bong Revilla is using the power of celebrity and mixing it with
action-star tactics to intimidate and crack down on piracy in the
country — one of the reasons cited for the slump in the movie and
recording industries. He has been able to bust a few syndicates but
will need to go beyond photo opportunities if the government intends
to win the war against pirates. Success in his campaign, though,
could win for him his father's seat in the Senate as well as the
support of film producers and recording executives bleeding from
losses to piracy.

24. CARLITOS SIGUION-REYNA, Filmmaker and president, Directors Guild
of the Philippines

v CONTENT € POLITICS I CELEBRITY
Carlitos Siguion-Reyna is an outspoken voice for artistic freedom
in the increasingly conservative moral environment imposed by
Malacaρang. The controversial banning of the film "Live Sex"
by the Palace two years ago showed the political muscle and
warm bodies the influential Directors Guild can muster in
its campaign against the so-called moral majority. The collective
filmography of Siguion-Reyna and his fellow director-activists
Joey Reyes and Joel Lamangan alone includes some of the most
critically acclaimed works in local cinema, a distinction that
has given their cause credibility.

25. JUNE TORREJON-RUFINO, President, Professional Artists and
Managers, Inc.

« STAR MAKER
Rufino's PAMI often operates like the Mafia. It's one for all and
all for one, and when one manager is hurt, their organization comes
together to retaliate. PAMI has the power to freeze artists, boycott
producers, and sabotage projects — proof that despite the star-
driven industry, it is the star makers and not the stars themselves
that wield the real power.

MOST INFLUENCIAL PEOPLE IN PHIL SHOWBIZ ENTERTAINMENT
================ group three =================

A music scene special report from the . .
Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism (PCIJ)

Entertainment is a powerful and wealthy industry that has cast a
spell over millions of Filipinos. We list the 25 individuals who
determine the content of entertainment, package the stars, and
control the distribution of showbiz products.

TRUST Filipinos to turn entertainment into a P40-billion business
that thrives even when the economy is in the doldrums, its influence
felt not only across economic sectors but also in politics. The
entertainment industry provides corporations a platform from which
to advertise their products and gives telecommunications companies
the content to deliver over their networks. Entertainment also
drives consumer spending and keeps Filipinos plugged into radio, TV,
and mobile phones.

But the real power of entertainment over our lives can be seen in
the ways it has shaped our popular culture and defined our character
as a people. Entertainment values have infected every aspect of life
and have found their way into our conversations, our vocabulary, our
fashion sense, and even our brand of politics.

To appreciate the power of entertainment over our national life is
to acknowledge the men and women who pull the strings behind every
celebrity, hit program, or trend. These are the people who produce
the content of entertainment — the tunes, the programs, and
films we listen to and watch — and who distribute it across
the country through their radio and TV networks, retail outlets,
theaters, and the new wireless technologies.

The power is also with the stars who make this content interesting
and worth watching or downloading over vast networks, and the people
responsible for hyping them, manufacturing their images, and opening
the doors to stardom. Yet while star power is awesome, it is never
complete — at least without the money. And so it is that the power
also belongs to those who finance the dreams of stardom as well
as to those who frustrate them through government regulations
and public codes of morality.

The power list below brings together names from all over the
entertainment industry and some from even outside it. Because the
world of show business runs on hype and self-promotion, drawing up a
list of the industry's power elite is never easy. To cut through the
hyperbole, separate the real power brokers from the pretenders, and
produce a semblance of objectivity, we interviewed talent managers,
artists, and executives across networks and companies. We also used
a set of criteria: the elements of power that provide an individual
with the control over the making of stars, the creation of content,
and the distribution of that content to audiences, and of course,
the financial resources to sustain it. Plus, there are also
intangibles like gravitas and character, qualities that separate the
truly powerful from — to borrow a term in showbiz — the
merely "feeling."

On top of the list are the media moguls— the most powerful of
the lot who control the hardware and software, which is to say, the
machines, the talents, and the technology that creates content and
the pipelines that distribute it. Of the 25, an overwhelming
proportion belongs to the television industry. TV remains the most
popular medium of entertainment because it's accessible and it's
free. Hard times and cheap alternatives offered by pirates have
affected the film and music industry. A few years ago, movie
producers and recording executives would have dominated the list,
but today, only those who had the foresight to diversify into
television survive.

Without doubt, stars are made and unmade in the hands of media
moguls, but the few who can stand up to their power and leverage
their popularity to negotiate their terms are those that appear
below. As for those with neither the clout, ability nor stomach to
face the often humiliating experience of negotiations and self-
promotion, the industry has created the role of the star maker and
deal broker: the agents, managers and publicists. No surprise then
that in a society that worships celebrity, six star makers land on
the list of the most powerful — many of whom have, because
of their proximity to stars, become celebrities themselves.

The 25 men and women on this list belong to different fields and
educational and class backgrounds, but they all share the same
traits, without which one is only popular or wealthy but not
powerful. In the end, it's about character — or charisma.
This, and the ability to connect to others. In entertainment,
just as in businesses or politics, power is proportional to the
size of your network. Companies and individuals that attempt
to do it alone fail miserably, while those that buy and sell
to each other and form alliances survive and emerge stronger.
No wonder synergy and convergence are the buzzwords of the
industry today.

But the side effect of synergy, when applied to individuals, is
often a case of conflict of interest. You'll find that many talent
managers on the list double up as publicists, showbiz writers,
program producers, and hosts.

There is a caveat. While the entertainment elite wields power, it is
power that is ultimately in the hands of the market: the Filipino
audience, who can just as easily grant and withdraw it as it
pleases.

MOST INFLUENCIAL PEOPLE IN PHIL SHOWBIZ ENTERTAINMENT
================ group four =================

A music scene special report from the . .
Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism (PCIJ)

« STAR MAKER — the power to make and break stars
I CELEBRITY — the power to draw audiences
v CONTENT — the power of hits
΅ DISTRIBUTION — the power and network to distribute hits to
people
€ POLITICS — the power of political clout and the
right political connections
l MONEY — the power to finance entertainment projects

1. EUGENIO LOPEZ III, Chairman and CEO, ABS-CBN

v CONTENT ΅ DISTRIBUTION « STAR MAKER € POLITICS
Gabby Lopez is the quintessential media mogul presiding over a media
empire. Software and hardware, content to delivery, if it has to do
with entertainment, chances are he controls it via the vast network
of properties acquired and reacquired by the Lopez family over the
past 25 years. That conglomerate now includes properties that range
from TV and radio broadcasting to cable, internet service, product
licensing, recording, film production, post-production, new media,
publishing, and international distribution. Although Gabby Lopez
inherited his position from his father — the late Eugenio 'Geny'
Lopez Sr. — it is his vision of a vertically integrated media
company that has transformed ABS-CBN from a broadcasting business
into the most profitable and powerful total entertainment company in
the country.

2. FEDERICO GARCIA, President and COO, ABS-CBN

v CONTENT ΅ DISTRIBUTION « STAR MAKER
Freddie Garcia is the king of programming — a distinction even
the
competition acknowledges. A legendary figure at the network, Garcia
was invited back to run the station when the Lopezes reacquired ABS-
CBN in 1986; he turned the station around from last to first place
in ratings and revenues in just over a year. His secret lies in his
uncanny ability to feel the pulse of the market, spot promising
talent, manufacture hype, and produce hits. Garcia is above all a
marketing genius who has transformed ABS-CBN into one of the most
recognizable and admired brands in the country.

3. FELIPE GOZON, Chairman and CEO, GMA Network

v CONTENT ΅ DISTRIBUTION « STAR MAKER
As head of GMA, Felipe Gozon oversees a group of media companies
that include broadcasting, new media, post-production, and
international distribution. He recounts how GMA management had once
been content to pay second fiddle to ABS-CBN, content in its
reputation for balanced programming and award-winning shows. That
culture, he now says, is a thing of the past. When Gozon took over
as CEO of GMA in 2000, one of the first things he did was purge the
management team led by his predecessor and co-owner Menardo Jimenez.
Gozon has revitalized GMA by bringing new blood into his top
management team, recruiting big stars, and introducing bold
programming moves to challenge rival ABS-CBN head on. So far, his
aggressive moves are paying off. From a far second in the ratings,
GMA has moved up and continues to inch closer to ABS-CBN, even
edging the network in daytime and weekend programming. The rise of
GMA has leveled the playing field and challenged the virtual
monopoly ABS-CBN enjoyed over artists, talents, and advertisers.

4. LILY MONTEVERDE, Executive Producer, Regal Films

v CONTENT « STAR MAKER
Mother Lily defies the average person's image of a media mogul. Low-
key and unapologetically plain, she prefers to remain backstage
where she knows the real power resides. After decades of providing
the public with some of the most popular films and love teams,
Mother Lily remains an enigma to those who can't seem to decide
whether to revile or celebrate her. The reason for the ambivalence?
Her practice of manipulating the entertainment press into hyping
Regal's latest projects and the studio's leading stars through
manufactured intrigues and staged controversies. Despite this, few
deny her talent for determining the taste of the ordinary person, an
ability she continues to develop through watching films in public
movie houses and mingling with the fans. And as Assunta de Rossi's
breakthrough film "Red Diaries" tells us, Mother Lily has proven
that a gut feel for the market coupled with a heavy dose of
controversy remain a winning formula for generating box-office hits
and catapulting unknowns to stardom.

5. VIC DEL ROSARIO, Chairman and CEO, VIVA Entertainment Group

v CONTENT ΅ DISTRIBUTION « STAR MAKER
The crisis in the recording and movie industry has diminished the
power and profits of Boss Vic's formidable entertainment empire.
Although still a force in the music recording, film production and
distribution business, VIVA's fortunes have been kept alive by its
investment in television programming on IBC 13's primetime block.
Del Rosario has shown that he's still a major player with a number
of bankable hits like the popular game show "Who Wants To Be a
Millionaire" and the PBA series. By acquiring Vintage Sports, VIVA
has also become the country's premier sports content provider.

6. CHARO SANTOS-CONCIO, Executive Vice President, ABS-CBN
Entertainment Group and Star Cinema

v CONTENT ΅ DISTRIBUTION « STAR MAKER I CELEBRITY
Charo Santos-Concio is known better for her powerful performances on
screen than for the power she wields within ABS-CBN's entertainment
division, where she oversees the production of programs and the
hiring of talents that put together the network's dramas, variety
shows, and sit-coms. Through smash hits like the
telenovelas "Esperanza" and "Pangako sa 'Yo," and box office winners
like Star Cinema's "Anak," Santos has exhibited a knack for
manipulating the heart strings of female audiences all over the
country.

7. FERNANDO POE JR., Actor

I CELEBRITY v CONTENT € POLITICS l MONEY
The king of action films is also the most popular actor who hardly
ever acts anymore. For FPJ, power seems to grow inversely
proportional to the number of films he stars in. The few movies he's
done have been consistent hits at the box office and even reruns on
TV are ratings winners. He has used his popularity to command huge
talent fees and his clout to get producers to provide him creative
control over film projects and the television rights to them.
Political power is also something FPJ wields these days. None other
than best buddy Erap, otherwise known as ex-President Joseph
Estrada, promises to back him in 2004 if ever the action king
considers a run for the presidency.
