NOTE: Certainly we all don't agree with the part about an
age difference between Regine and Piolo. Not when she was
just coming off a BIG hit movie with Robin Padilla! Post
continues below right after the article. -mmJun

MANILA, Philippines—From time to time, we mull over the
entertainment scene and come up with analyses intended to help
obviate some negative consequences for show biz in general or
individual projects in particular. More often than not, however, the
telltale signs are ignored, and the dreaded minus points are chalked
up.

An example of this is the local TV industry’s use of big movie stars
to generate maximum viewership for its shows. We warned the leaders
of the movie industry to dissuade its stars from “going TV,” because
this could lead to the local viewing public’s diminished patronage
of Filipino films.

Worst fears

Alas, our worst fears have been confirmed: The local movie industry
is now in dire straits, while television has become the most
prosperous and influential medium in the country—“thanks,” in part,
to the drawing power of the movie stars who topbill its many shows.

Another debacle that entertainment industry leaders failed to avert
was the unprofessional conduct of our spoiled action stars, who used
to reign supreme at the box office.

Their action starrers made big money, so they got an inflated notion
of their actual worth. They jacked up their talent fees, demanded a
bigger say on the production people who worked with them, and line-
produced their own movies—for added millions.

Well, their movies started flopping left and right, and
the “impossible” has happened: The once invincible action movies are
seldom produced these days, and most action superstars have been put
out to pasture, or forced to make-do with roles on TV sitcoms, where
they’ve turned heavy-handed ribticklers.

Big deal

From time to time, some local show biz stars make a big deal out of
their “invasion” of Hollywood to become “international” stars.

We caution them to firm up their job offers first, but they think
their great looks and talent are enough for them to get what they
want.

Months or years later, however, they finally admit failure and come
back to reenergize their local careers. All too often, however, it’s
too late, since the fans they had “abandoned” have opted to support
younger stars, instead.

This is also true when it comes to filmmakers. Some people who
profess to be well-connected in Hollywood offer to help new
directors find work in the world’s film capital, and many hopefuls
compete for that big break.

Alas, many “winners” eventually come home with little to show for
their vaunted cinematic sojourn. When will they ever learn?

We’ve also been warning our artists that our “deathless” colonial
mentality had to be faced and dealt with first, before Filipino
performing arts and media can truly flower.

Subservience

Unfortunately, our subservience to foreign and alien standards and
production models continues to fester, so we’ve yet to come into our
own as unique artists.

Worse, English-language and “foreign-clone” projects provide unfair
competition for truly Filipino productions.

Taking a more specific tack, we cautioned against casting Regine
Velasquez and Piolo Pascual as sweethearts in a movie together,
because their obvious age difference could run counter to the visual
harmony inherent to successful romantic-comedy-dramas.

Age problem

Well, their film ended up not doing as well as expected, and some
industry observers now agree that the age problem had something to
do with that outcome.

These days, we detect the same problem affecting “A Love Story,” the
new movie starring Aga Muhlach, Maricel Soriano and Angelica
Panganiban.

The Aga-Angelica “May-October” pairing is no problem, but the Aga-
Maricel tandem is. This is due to the fact that Aga’s recent
makeover has made him look younger than his actual age, while
Maricel looks more mature.

NOTE: Certainly we all don't agree with the part about an
age difference between Regine and Piolo. Not when she was
just coming off a BIG hit movie with Robin Padilla! Where
the idea of Regine playing a con person would have been
partly to blame if it wasn't a hit, I would have imagine..
No, we all know what parts of the reasons for the movie not
smashing at it should have. Heck, fans been asking for them
in a team up for years! It has alot to do with politics in
showbiz for one. Most fans haven't read my posting about
Regine's detractors working against Viva many times in the
past. It was posted only in the RVFans Bird Nest yahoo group.

And everyone seen how Ogie's big announcement in Yes magazine
( I call it Ogie's FORCED announcement ) happened to be timed
with Regine's movie with Piolo. Looking back now you can see
there was no real important reason for Ogie to have the story
come out when it did. Especially when it was done last APRIL!
Just so you will know and not have to take what you are being
told by those in showbiz with their own motives and agenda
that is so secretive they got enough people with GMA-7 doing
they part to cover up and hide what is our INSIDE BUZZ has
been reporting is true. Question: Why are some GMA-7 people
risking exposure just to cover for an artists detractor who
is very much identified working for channel 2? And why is he
able to control and direct what talents in GMA-7 do like he
has been able to do with Regine & Ogie and others? With the
help of those in co-hosts with GMA-7, of course. Diva, Mr.Low?
