Regine performed but Regine did not win for
her song "Shine". But since she did performed
you can guessed she 'shined' anyway. ;-)

IT was occasion for them to shout out their loudest “Hallelujah.”

In the 19th Awit Awards held at Casino Pilipino last June 15, rock
band Bamboo swept trophies in major categories including "Song of
the Year" and "Album of the Year."

"We wanted this," simply says Bamboo lead singer Bamboo Manalac,
accepting the trophy for "Song of The Year" that brought on cheers
from both colleagues and fans. The quartet won the top plum for the
single "Hallelujah" from their sophomore album "Light, Peace, Love."

Bamboo collected a total of five trophies rounded up by honors in
categories "Best Ballad" ("Much Has Been Said" tied with Hale’s "The
Day You Said Goodnight"), "Best Rock" and "Best Performance by A
Group." They even clinched a People’s Choice Awards for Favorite
Group.

Composed of Bamboo, Nathan Azarcon, Ira Cruz and Vic Mercado, Bamboo
was so hot that they won in almost all categories they were
nominated in save for "Music Video of the Year" (which went to
Rivermaya’s "You’ll Be Safe Here") and Best World/Alternative Music
(Itchyworms, "Akin Ka Na Lang").

Their victories also pushed EMI Music in the lead among record
companies by claiming five of seven trophies for the label that
night.

Bamboo also outdistanced runners-up in tallies as Rivermaya and Nina
that each won in two categories maximum.

"You’ll Be Safe Here" by Rivermaya from a popular teleserye last
year, won as "Best Song Written for Movie/TV/Stage Play" and "Music
Video of the Year." Nina, on the other hand, landed "Best Selling
Album of the Year" for "Live!" and "Best Duet" for her collaboration
with R&B upstart, Thor, in "The Closer I Get to You."

In the Best New Artist categories, the "Best Performance by a New
Female Recording Artist" was by April for her R&B/dance tune "Stay"
while "Best Performance by a New Male Recording Artist" went to OJ
Mariano for "Maghihintay Sa ‘Yo."

When it comes to new groups, Pupil stood out for "Best Performance
by a New Group Recording Artist" for "Nasan Ka."

Among established singers, pop-rock artist Barbie Almalbis and
her "Just a Smile" got the nod for the "Best Performance by a
Female." Gary Valenciano, also this year’s "Dangal ng Pilipino
Awardee" together with Martin Nievera, further validated his icon
status via his nth "Best Performance by a Male Recording Artist"
this time for the inspirational, "Break Me."

In specialized categories, "Best Rap" was claimed by Dice & K9
for "6 in Da Morning"; "Best Jazz Recording" by Mon David for "Let
Go"; "Best R&B" by South Border for "Asa"; and "Best Instrumental
Performance" by Renato Lucas and Raul Sunico for "Gaano Kadalas ang
Minsan."

This year’s Awit Awards saw first time partnership of Philippine
Association of Record Companies (PARI) with MTV Pilipinas in
mounting the production. In lieu of this, special citation as
People’s Choice Awards were determined based on votes and presented
by MTV Veejays KC Montero, Cindy Curleto and Marc Abaya. Recipients
of these are Martin Nievera for male, Rachelle Ann Go for female,
Hale for group and "Hallelujah" for song.

During a pre-awarding rite held weeks earlier, trophies were handed
out for technical categories. These went to Mon David ("Atin Ku Ping
Singsing") for "Best Vocal Arrangement;" Gerard Salonga ("Lipad Ng
Pangarap") for "Best Musical Arrangement;" Angee Rosul ("Superproxy
2K6") for "Best Engineered Recording;" Bru and Marco Cabazal
("Tala") for "Best Album Package;" "Hubag" for "Best Regional
Recording;" "Isang Taong Lumipas" for "Best Christmas;" "Ragarabo"
for "Best Novelty;" "Stay Real" for "Best Dance;" and "Pieta (Oyayi
sa Paanan ni Hesus)" for Best Inspirational/Religious.

Among the celebrity presenters were Karylle, Parokya Ni Edgar,
Sugarfree, Apryl, Rachelle Ann Go, Rico Robles, Artstrong, Itchy
Worms, Kitchie Nadal, Barbie Almalbis and Ely Buendia.

Performances were rendered by Sandwich, Philippine Youth Symphonic
Band, MYMP, Top Suzara, Jed Madela, Sitti, Bamboo, Urbandub, 6
Cyclemind, Hale, Pupil, Stone Free, Dicta License, Gary Valenciano,
Martin Nievera, Orange & Lemons, The Dawn and Regine Velasquez.

Results in the 19th Awit Awards were tabulated by Isla Lipana & Co.

Awit Awards is the longest-running award-giving body in the country
with objective of developing and progressing local recording
potentials to world-class talents.
