Ogie Alcasid surprised over ‘Bakit Ngayon Ka Lang’ ‘purchase’
By YUGEL LOSORATA

Singer-songwriter Ogie Alcasid was surprised upon learning that the
rights to his classic song "Bakit Ngayon Ka Lang" was bought by a
big entertainment company for its use.

The ‘rights’ to the popular ballad, which he wrote with songwriter
Aaron Paul Del Rosario, was bought by Bigfoot Entertainment – an
international company that produces films and music videos, and
boasts of a 19,000 square-meter, state-of the-art facilities in
Mactan, Cebu.

During a recent press visit at the Bigfoot compound which served as
venue for the Visayas auditions of the ongoing first Philippine
Idol, authorities of the company showed the media a "Bakit Ngayon Ka
Lang" music video interpreted by foreign artists. The song is
audibly transformed into a dance ditty with English adaptations of
its Tagalog lyrics.

Michael Gleissner, chairman of Bigfoot Group of Companies, fell in
love with the OPM gem. Bigfoot’s Chief Operating Officer Matt
Lubetich explained, "Our chairman sings that song at parties. It’s
the first song he learned here in the Philippines."

Ogie, for his part, said he didn’t have any knowledge of the matter
therefore could not react to it. In a recent phone interview with
the Manila Bulletin, he said, "Di ako makapag-react kasi hindi ko
alam yung bagay na ‘yan. I did a show in Cebu and heard over that a
foreigner loves that song very much. That was it."

Lubetich, when asked how come Ogie was clueless about the deal,
insisted, "Some people may think that we’re ripping off that classic
piece. But no, we have 100% clearance of everything we do. We got
the rights of the song and I know we talked to some other guys as
regards to the deal, but not with Ogie himself."

The Bulletin tried to reach Ogie’s manager Leo Dominguez for comment
but the latter cannot be reached. Ogie, on the other hand,
maintained his position that he still needs to clarify the matter to
authorities.

"Bakit Ngayon Ka Lang" was originally recorded by Ogie for his 1992
album "On Air." It was one of his earlier hits, along with "Nandito
Ako" and "Mahal Kita, Walang Iba." Interestingly, the version being
adapted by Bigfoot is the live duet popularized by the group
Freestyle and Pops Fernandez.

Ogie recalled, "I remember one night Aaron Paul came to me and asked
that we write a song. That was the birth of "Bakit Ngayon Ka Lang"
which later became Pops’ favorite kaya she asked that she sing it
during that Freestyle concert."

Lubetich elaborated, "We feel excited about having done and spent
thousands for this music video of "Bakit Ngayon Ka Lang." We’re
still thinking of how we are going to release this in the market.
But we want to assure everyone there’s nothing to worry about as far
as the song is concerned."

As for Ogie who is responsible for writing some of today’s enduring
Tagalog ballads like "Kailangan Ko’y Ikaw" and "Kailangan Kita," he
does not seem to take the matter seriously, believing there is
nothing wrong with it. He just wished he learned of the
complimenting news before it ever reached the press.
