Dennis Trillo now a full-fledged recording artist

Last Sunday afternoon, television’s hottest heartthrob becomes the latest hyphenate in show business. From hereon he will be known as actor-singer-recording artist. Thanks to fellow hyphenates Regine Velasquez (singer-recording star-record producer-concert producer-film/TV host-actor) and Ogie Alcasid (singer-songwriter-recording star-record producer-film/TV comedian and not to mention entrepreneur) whose recently formed Indimusic has the reluctant star as its first recording artist.
Dennis agreed to sign with the new label put up by Regine and Ogie (along with Regine’s sister Cacai Velasquez and husband Raul Mitra) because he didn’t want to pass up the chance of “being the first recording artist of the newest music label.”
I asked Regine after the copies of the contract that officially declared the partnership between Indimusic and Dennis Trillo why the company chose the young man to be its first artist.
“Why not?” Regine said.
That tells a lot about Regine’s confidence in the untapped musical talent of Dennis. Later, the singer who is fondly referred to by her fans as “songbird” (sans les plumes, of course) told members of the showbiz press that she and Ogie believed that Dennis has got what it takes to be a recording artist, and that after observing him onstage in the weekly variety show SOP, they were convinced that the young man would make it big in the recording industry.
Dennis’ manager explained why he and his ward went to Indimusic when there were offers from more established labels. “Dennis and I agreed that with Regine and Ogie at the helm of the company, we will feel more confident that the deal will not be just another piece of paper. Dennis, in fact, is entrusting his future in music to these two icons of the music industry.”
Regine and Ogie said that as the producers of the album, they would not impose upon their artist what they think would be right for him, but rather try to reach a creative compromise that would result in a well-crafted package of songs that are performed from the singer’s heart.
Ogie said he’s contributing a material for the album. Regine’s overseeing the production of every track in the album that will include some covers and originals. Two months have been set for the actual recording, and the album must be ready for Dennis’ fans by October, several weeks before his first major appearance in a musical concert at the Araneta Coliseum.
Dennis is one of few actors whose rise is near phenomenal. From a relatively unknown talent at ABS-CBN where he was launched as a young star along with fellow Star Circle Batch 10 alumni Alfred Vargas and Nadine Samonte, Dennis’ star grew brighter when he became a free agent working mostly on GMA-7. He finally graduated from supporting roles to lead star in the record-breaking Darna series. Currently, he shares equal billing with Angel Locsin in Majika.
He also steered the success of the small horror flick Pamahiin, making him a bankable name in the local box-office. He is now a hot property on the Regal Films lot, currently shooting for TXT, a modern gothic film that also stars Angel Locsin and real-life boyfriend Oyo Boy Sotto.
Despite the media attention and the crowd adulation, Dennis has remained painfully shy. Well, I guess that’s what endears him deeper into the hearts of his fans.
