Regine reigns
PENPOINT By Ryan Mark
The Freeman 10/26/2005
That Regine Velasquez is "Asia's Songbird" is already a given. She
has been successful in hauling hundreds of fans to fill her concert
venues. How far she has, indeed, come-from being a virtually unknown
provincial lass to the country's most sought-after singer.
She is even a big star in the acting department. To top it all, her
BIG heart makes her stand out among contemporaries in the industry.
For that, she reigns high-and is blessed.
I've yet to see Regine in person. I've wondered in the past if she
really is beautiful or just telegenic? Is she for real or is she just
good in public relations?
After seeing her on GMA-7's "Mel and Joey" last Sunday doing such a
noble act of auctioning her gowns for the benefit of less fortunate
children and the Kapuso Foundation, my eagerness to meet her has
grown intense. If and when that time comes, my purpose would no
longer be to rate her physical appearance, but to tell her personally
how happy I am to have come across someone, who at the peak of her
career, remains humble and grateful. I would want to whisper in her
ears how honored I am to have met a big star who never fails to look
back to where she came from. Bravo Regine!
Though you don't know me, I would like to tell you that you are a
superstar on my list as far as attitude is concerned. Mel Tiangco
said that unknown to many Regine has been helping charitable
institutions for a long time already. Regine said she decided to have
the auction after watching the public service portion of the Kapuso
Foundation, helmed by Mel Tiangco, on "24 Oras." Regine said that
children would be happy over any assistance extended to them-be it a
book or a toy. She said that what keeps her doing such civic acts is
the different kind of satisfaction she gets from the mere smile on a
child's face.
Actually, I can relate to that feeling being a volunteer myself for
The Freeman Foundation for several months now. My joining started
with a joke. I kiddingly told people that as a "beauty queen" I
should engage in civic/charity works. But then, when I became part of
a group of 20 who went to the mountain barangay of Tagbao in June to
hold a fun day for elementary students, it dawned on me that my
membership is not just for kicks nor because I want to be praised.
Rather, I love being of service to the community in my own little
way.
Seeing the children excited and contented with what you've given them
makes you realize how blessed you are after all. You don't have to be
rich to be of help. All you need is the purest of intentions: be of
help without expecting anything in return. They say what you give
returns to you quadruple times. It might be true, but at the end of
the day, it's the fulfillment that makes you feel like a millionaire.
Regine also said she wanted to help because she knows how it is to be
poor, having lived before that way in her hometown, Bulacan. Regine's
wondrous act of helping others is an inspiration. No wonder she looks
radiant on television, it's her inner beauty shining through.
My friends, you too can experience the joy in making children smile
this Christmas. Join us as The Freeman Foundation treats some 50
streetchildren to a fun-filled Christmas party on December 10. You
can donate anything-from toys, clothing to books. Remember your gift
does not have to be expensive because it's the thought that really
counts. Take it from "Asia's Songbird"! * * *

Speaking of fun, I'm quite sure that the fans who went to Gaisano
Main and Gaisano Countrymall Friday night to witness ABS-CBN star
John Wayne Sace's show had a great time.
Oh my gosh! Screaming, clapping and cheering were all I could hear
each time the 5'7 Fil-Am young star appeared on stage. Imagine when
John was done and heading towards Lighthouse restaurant at
Countrymall for dinner, girls and gays tailed him, most of whom
blocked our way to give him a handshake or a hug. That was the first
time in my almost a year of interviewing stars brought in here by
mommy Rose Gaisano where I witnessed such a lively and responsive
crowd. When we were already eating, fans lingered outside the
restaurant no matter if we stayed there for two hours. Some tapped
the glass wall just to get John's attention. Female students from an
exclusive high school even went to dine at Lighthouse that as
expected they were able to ask for his autograph and had his picture
taken with them. Clever girls indeed!
John is a very good dancer, has chemistry with the crowd, but he has
to improve his singing. Star Magic is grooming him to be the next
dramatic star, after noticing his potential in the said genre.
Remember his portrayal of the youngest son of Vilma Santos in "Dekada
70"? So good was he that he won best child star performer in the
Metro Manila Film Festival and the Guillermo Mendoza Awards Night.
The 16-year-old actor is part of the upcoming thriller "Kutob," Octo
Arts Films' entry to the MMFF this December, which is topbilled by
Rica Peralejo. Who knows he might get another award in a supporting
role?
Is he handsome? I can't say yet because he is still on the lanky
side. But he has very expressive eyes. Born on May 9, 1989, this
Taurean described himself as "responsible, mapagtimpi and masarap
magmahal." We had to ask him what is going on between him and Maja
Salvador, his new loveteam partner? "She is a loveteam. Ginagawa
namin ang aming trabaho. She is my special friend at nakakausap ko
rin siya pag-may problema ako." His crushes, he said, are "Pinoy Big
Brother" hosts Toni Gonzaga and Mariel Rodriguez. Toni because he
likes "chinita" and Mariel because "she is cute and kalog." John
started his showbiz career by auditioning for the now defunct ABS-CBN
show, "Kaybol," when he was only 9. In 1999, he shot his first
movie, "Dibdiban ang Laban," where he played the young Gary Estrada.
But it was in "Dekada 70" at the age of 12 that he made critics sit
up and notice what may be the birth of the future Christopher de
Leon.
John, whose movie idols are Al Pacino and Robin Padilla, dreams of
playing a "psychotic killer" because he believes this would truly
test his acting skills. Like any teenager, he plays basketball and is
fond of reading tabloids because of the horoscope. He also smokes,
but not to the point of consuming an entire pack in a day, as his
manager pointed out. Very, very discreet, he only smokes inside the
comfort room.
The charismatic actor punctuates his sentences with the common "po"
and "opo." But I could sense he was sincere. Hopefully, when he
becomes very successful as an actor, John Wayne Sace would find it in
his heart to duplicate if not surpass the admirable deeds of Regine
Velasquez, particularly in reaching out to those who are in need.
