FOR REGINE VELASQUEZ, who shows up sporting a witch's hat for our
interview, Halloween means bonding time with her family. "We dress
up, par ade in costumes around our house in Bulacan, whip up a feast,
and play bingo together," she discloses.
"It's been our tradition for the last 15 years. Dati, kami-kami lang,
pero ngayon, dumadami na kami, because two of my sisters are already
married and have kids. We also have more dogs now."
Costume
Coming up with the most creative costume is serious business for
them, Regine points out. "One time, Cacai and her family showed up in
Japanese finery. Last year, naka-Mulawin ang mga anak ni Dianne, my
mom was Wonder Woman at nag-costume ang Tatay ko for the first time!"
Even the maids join in the fun as "manananggal and white ladies,"
says Regine with a laugh. As for herself, the songbird admits to
being corny. "Usually, I just paint my face with a butterfly design.
But last year, I was Darna, and I'll be Darna again this year-because
I got a new set of costumes (for a movie project)."
Regine is exempt from the contest, as she's the one who gives out
cash incentives. "But, more than the money, we do it for the sheer
fun of it," she explains.
Simple joys like these keeps the 35-year-old performer, who's been on
the top of her game for more than a decade now, from getting stuck in
a rut and go on living a full life.
Away from the limelight, she busies herself with hobbies like
painting and needlecraft. She takes pride in her crocheted cellphone
holders.
Atmosphere
Regine also loves to hang out in her bathroom. "There's a certain
atmosphere in there that's conducive to creative thinking and
relaxation," she nods.
"In fact, I've thought up many ideas for albums and concerts in the
bathroom." A case in point is her latest series of
shows, "Reflections," at the Aliw Theater (Nov. 4, 5, 11, 12, 18 and
19, and Dec. 9 and 10), which she produces and directs.
The songbird looks back at her 20 years in the biz through the songs
of her idols, Barbra Streisand, Sheena Easton, Angela Bofill, Sharon
Cuneta, Kuh Ledesma, Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey.
