Subject: Weekend trips in NZ/Australia

I've been looking through travel books for a while now, and I think I've narrowed down some of the places I'd like to see on weekends while we're over there. I was just wondering if anyone else was interested in the following places so that we could maybe begin thinking about which weekends to set aside and stuff:

New Zealand:
-Rotorua (people that I've talked to that have been on this trip before said this place is AMAZING)
-Queenstown (very outdoorsy)
-Auckland
-Marlborough/Nelson (This is right at the tip of the South Island, so we could get here really easily)
-Christchurch (apparently the train ride from the top of the South Island to this city is beautiful, so it might be cool to travel by train here)

Australia:
-Tasmania
-Cairns, Queensland (access to the Great Barrier Reef and I think there's a rainforest?)
-Ayers Rock/Outback (this is kind of far, but I think it would be worth the trouble to see it. There are flights and trains that go out there...I think it's too far for driving though, but who knows)

Just hoping to find people to travel with on weekends:-) Let me know if any of these interest you as well!

Amanda

I have heard the same from past folks about Rotorua and would definately up for a vist there and also christchurch for NZ i have to look into the rest but I am sure they would be good times also, For australia definately count me infor Cairns, Queensland(anyone scuba certified, i dont know if mine will finish in time but if it does i would really like to scuba dive the GB reef). Ayers Rock/Outback is definate atop my list of places to checkout and driving i dont believe is feesable also, so it probably would be good to start looking into flights for that one.

I was looking at a lot of the same places, and I think those are all really good weekend trips. I just got my scuba certification too, and I would love to go diving in the Great Barrier Reef. I would also like to go to Sutherland Falls, though it is a bit of a hike, and would probably take an entire day.

I definately want to go to the Great Barrier Reef. I think we need to fly if we want to go to the best part. How were you planning on getting there?

I hadn't really thought about getting there yet. I think Jason would probably know the best way, but I think you're right, it would probably be best to fly there, since it's kind of a long way from Brisbane.

I just finished my scuba certification, too and would really love to go to the great barrier reef. I heard that last year they took a bus from Brisbane to the southern tip of the reef, but that the better parts are farther north, so it may be worth a flight. The only thing to keep in mind about that is that you cant fly right after you dive. I'm definitely down for other weekend trips too, the ones you mentioned, Amanda, sound great!
