I just finished my scuba certification, too and would really love to go to the great barrier reef. I heard that last year they took a bus from Brisbane to the southern tip of the reef, but that the better parts are farther north, so it may be worth a flight. The only thing to keep in mind about that is that you cant fly right after you dive. I'm definitely down for other weekend trips too, the ones you mentioned, Amanda, sound great!
