Where: Rotorua
When: Friday night through Sunday evening, Jan. 7-9
Who: About 17 people have said they'd go (and that's just those who have read these message boards.. after the email goes out, we'll probably have alot more)
What we're doing: We'll camp out Friday and Saturday night, or find a hostel for those who aren't up for nice summer NZ camping..

Saturday you can go sledging or tour the area (there's LOTS to see)
Sunday you can go rafting or tour the area

Rafting will be on the class V Wairoa river.. It will be about a 2 hour trip and cost around NZ$85.
Sledging will be on the Rangitaiki river and cost about NZD$125.

To see what else there is to do in Rotorua, check out http://www.rotoruanz.com/home.asp or for companie providing activities, adventure activities, or for planned out trips, suggested iteneraries.

feel free to make suggestions or changes to the plans.. hope everyone comes out for a fun first weekend

So after thinking about it, we're not going to have any camping gear. We'll be staying at a hostel in downtown Rotorua with plenty of pubsgeothermal pools/things to do nearby.. It'll be NZ$19 per person, and we'll have 2 rooms of 8, 1 room of 6, and 1 of 3

I was trying to find a good bus service, and my travel book recommended this InterCity service. I actually found a $10 fare from Wellington to Auckland with a stop in Rotorua. Here's the link below:

http://www.intercitycoach.co.nz/popup-10dollarpromo.htm

The price is good, but the times aren't. We wouldn't leave Wellington until 7:00 pm, and then we don't get to Rotorua until 3:25 in the morning. The way back is even worse, I don't think we get to Wellington until 6 on Monday morning. Anyway, just an option if we were willing to be a little flexible with sleeping patterns. If someone wouldn't mind doing a little more research on this, that'd be great. My computer at home is ancient and it was taking way too long for me to look up more. My book also mentions Newmans Coach Lines and Magic Bus (this one seemed like you needed to buy a 12 month pass though).
