I looked for a front motor plate to substitute for the motor mounts. The only one I could find that was wide enough to fit between the frame was the Competition Engineering part# C4004 (see pic below)
All of the block mounting holes are drilled, but you'll have to trim the edges to fit for final installation. You will also need the headers and steering shaft at time of the front plate install since their clearances revolve around where you will set the plate. I used Hooker part# 2243, 1 3/4" primary, 3" collector for '62-'67 Chevy II Nova. The Chevy II had a similar engine compartment which required a close fitting header. The fit on these was near perfect with only a slight modification to the floor pan which will be talked about later. I also got a new steering shaft from Flaming River (1-800-648-8022 ). The rag joint on the stock steering shaft will not clear the #1 primary, so this will have to be changed. Another thing that AJE didn't tell me was with the 1 1/2" rack drop, the shaft would need to be longer. I guess I should have figured this out myself. If you go the drop rack route, Flaming River sells longer shafts with their standard kits. You will need to measure and cut to length. There are 2 different spline counts on the rack shaft, so count the number of teeth or measure the shaft OD before you call to order. If your going to install a manual rack, now would be the time. My car came with a manual rack from a Mustang, so I left it in. I've heard that you can also use a rack off of a Pinto.

I bought a near cherry Fairmont Futura and intended to build a 408 windsor motor. Being a Chevy guy from birth I was shocked by ford parts prices, and having a stout 358 from my dirt super stock (400+ HP with a 2 barrel) available, I chose to take the road less traveled. Thank you for your forum and the advice of contributors. My first purchase was a qa1 crossmember (i was still thinking big windsor motor). A mistake, but usable. Last week was the first trial fit and led to a sawzall attack of the engine mounts. A motor plate is the only way to go, and does not interfere with the swaybar install. The header search led me to the $50.00 per pound header company also but I would spend that on flanges, bends, and a tig welder first and have the welder and a header when done. When real progess is made I will follow up with more of the Mouse in a Fox House. Thanks again.
