Subject: Neonatal Circumcision

I had a radical circumcision at the age of 6 months, just before the formation of the NHS in the UK in 1947. My parents told me very little but I have recently found out from an elderly aunt that it was for some sort of urinary problem and that my penis had been very swollen and a bit like a small football. My grandmother had objected strongly to it being done and I apparently screamed uncontrollable for several hours after being sent home after the day case procedure.

When I asked my father about it he just said that I had been in a lot of pain before the event but conveniently left out the bit about what happened afterwards. Does anyone recognize any these symptoms or is just another case of being unfortunate in being born at a time when subjecting babies to this ritual barbaric procedure was considered acceptable.

I should add that my father was uncut and my son certainly was not and he grew up without any problems.
