There really are very few theatre spaces of the GST's size with fixed, raked seating in Winnipeg. It makes it very fexible for theatre, dance, and live music. I think that after all of this effort to save the facility we should also strive to maintain the integrety of WHAT we are saving.

Of course this does not solve the financial woes of GST. Really, what is needed is a consortium of anchor tennants willing to commit to a certain number of weeks each year. The loss of rentals to Winnipeg Contemporary Dancers and Manitoba Theatre for Young People has been great, but surely there are other community based groups who need a good quality venue. Does anyone have contects with groups who may be interetsed? Even one week a year?

Shawna, I think you've hit the nail on the head. I believe that one of the problems which has faced the theatre is that NO ONE has activly sought new clients in years!! WHY?? I don't know, but I am convinced that this is part of the answer to the problem.

Lets do some aggressive marketing and see where it leads us!

Many other things are possible too, of course, but I think that the strength of the Gas Station Theatre is the theatre itself and our core business is the rental of that theatre. So lets get it rented!

Cheers,
Hugh

Shawna, In my mind, anchor tenants should be the mainstay of the theatre and why this has not been more aggressively pursued, I don't know. Any information on identifying such tenants would be extremely helpful.

Well, to identify one party: What about Shakespeare in the Ruins? I wonder if they would be interested in doing a show or two during the fall/winter? Although I have no connections to this company, I do know they do have strong following who would more than likely enjoy seeing their shows outside of their regular outdoor season. But, like I say, I don't really know, just thought they might be a company worth pursuing. I know there are a whole bunch of logistics to considers for this, but it's just a suggestion.

Or, this may already be thought of, and it would take some doing on somebody's part, but what about starting a theatre company that works strictly out of the gas station. Could be called "The OVCC Players" or something like that. Just like another kind of MTC, or, PTE. Now,I know plays cost money, and there are other logistics of this that must be addressed as well, but it's just another idea.

SIR has already been contacted but then the building went on the block. It would still be worth a phone call as the situation as changed.
