Kim Parrish, president of Miss America's Outstanding Teen, recently announced that the organization is unveiling a new program called Teens in Training.

This program is geared toward young women who are interested in participating in the Miss America's Outstanding Teen program, but would like more information and an in-depth look at the competition.

"You don't have to be a titleholder to participate, although you can be," says Kim. "It's really a workshop that shows you what it is like to compete at the pageant. We think it is going to be a great opportunity for mentoring and learning."

Kim hopes that the first Teens in Training program will take place at the 2011 MAOT pageant in Orlando. Tawny Darby, a former Miss Pennsylvania's Outstanding Teen, will be spearheading the new program.

Stay tuned for more information!

Class of 2009 for Miss America's Outstanding Teen was the best group in all of MAOT! All of the girls were absolutely beautiful and it was a stiff competition. All of the talents were flawless and the girls were so intelligent! It was the best class, and makes the 2010 group of teens look like a let down. And the talent this year is in no way comparison to last year. 2009 girls should be so proud of themselves and should all congratulate themselves for the amazing job they did representing their states......they are all future miss Americas!!

About Miss America's Outstanding Teen:

Miss America's Outstanding Teen is a scholarship-based program offering accomplished teens the opportunity to be awarded funds for college. The program promotes scholastic achievement, creative accomplishment, healthy living and community involvement for America's teens. In the past four years, the organization has made available more than $3 million in college scholarships. For more information, please visit www.maoteen.org

About Our Judges:

Maria DeSantis: At the age of 17, Maria DeSantis was crowned the second Miss America's Outstanding Teen, representing the state of New York. As Miss America's Outstanding Teen 2007, Maria spent her reign traveling the country promoting her personal platform, Getting Teens Involved in the Fight Against Cancer, and the National Platform, the US Dream Academy. While finishing her senior year of high school and graduating in the top of her class, Maria travelled around the country championing community involvement and spreading the word about this new amazing opportunity for young women.

Although Maria's personal platform targeted teens, she served as a motivational speaker for people of all ages. Maria spent her year addressing high school students, elementary school students, local communities, hospitals, and professional business organizations. She was able to blend her work with the American Cancer Society,

Alex's Lemonade Stand, and the US Dream Academy with her love of music and performance effectively throughout the year. She carried her involvement with these organizations on after her year of service, helping with local Relay for Life Fundraisers as well as Co-Chairing New York University's Relay for Life.

After passing on the MAOT crown to Caitlin Brunell, Maria attended New York University's Steinhardt School of Music, majoring in Classical Voice. She was the only freshman cast in the Spring Opera performance, Gilbert and Sullivan's The Gondoliers, and was a featured chorus member and principal dancer. Freshman year of college was a time of great personal growth for Maria, as she reevaluated her career and life goals. Although she enjoyed her time at NYU immensely, she decided that a career in performance was not her long-term desire.

After much deliberation, Maria transferred to Wagner College in her hometown of Staten Island, New York, and began working with her father at his CPA firm, DeSantis and Pellecchia LLC. Going into her senior year as a Business Administration major with a concentration in Accounting, Maria maintains a 4.0 cumulative GPA and plans on obtaining a Masters Degree in Accounting upon graduation. She recently spent a semester studying abroad in Rome, Italy, through St. John's University. Although no longer studying music in an academic setting, Maria still performs locally and studies privately. Music is a passion that will always hold a special place in her life.

Maria is thrilled to be a part of the judging panel choosing Miss America's Outstanding Teen 2011, and takes her responsibility to these young women, their families and friends, the Miss America Organization, and the nation very seriously. This competition changes more than just the lives of 53 young women. She says congratulations

to all of the contestants and thank you for sharing your talent, intellect, beauty, and grace and I am elated to welcome a new MAOT into the sisterhood that I hold so close to my own heart.

Subject: OP here, the reason I think this will give the dancers more of an advantage is because now you will barely be able to see any of the girls shape and muscle tone so fitness will have to be judged by their corny dance routine. The dancers always pick up the dance routines easier and tend to look better doing them. My states girl is a dancer but she has also worked very hard on her fitness and deserves to show it off. Bring back the shorts!

Subject: Miss Maryland Outstanding Teen collects crayons for sick children

WILLIAMSPORT - In less than two weeks, Miss Maryland Outstanding Teen Mary Teal Mulligan will flash her first smile and wave at the crowd at the Miss America Outstanding Teen competition.

But the Williamsport teenager can only think of one thing: crayons.

Ever since Mary earned the title of Miss Maryland Outstanding Teen in June, she's been fixated on crayons - how to get them, how to get paper for them and how to deliver the crayons to sick, hospitalized children who will appreciate them.

It's a project she's calling Coins for Crayons.

"What kid doesn't like to draw with crayons?" said Mary, a 17-year-old rising senior at Barbara Ingram School for the Arts.

Teal has collected coins from Williamsport-area businesses and used the money to purchase boxes of crayons for ill children at the Children's National Medical Center, a Children's Miracle Network hospital, in Washington, D.C. The Miss Maryland Outstanding Teen pageant is part of the Miss America pageant system, which Teal said encourages contestants to raise money for the Children's Miracle Network.

On Thursday, Mary and her mother Terri Mulligan delivered 849 boxes of crayons and included paper donated by local businesses.

"I didn't want to give them a check, I wanted to give them a tangible item they could use," Mary said.

Miss Maryland Outstanding Teen pageant was Mary's third pageant as a teen - the fourth if you count the one time she competed in a pageant when she was 8 and living in South Carolina.

"But that doesn't really count," she said.

Mary has been a dancer since age 3. She aspires to be a Radio City Rockette and dance in New York City. Her mother said entering that first childhood pageant seemed like a good idea at the time, a way to build stage confidence for her fledgling dancer.

But in the end, it wasn't what they thought, Mary and Terri Mulligan said. Mary said she was sure it was going to be her first and last pageant.

"I remember being surrounded by a lot of Barbie Doll kind of looking girls," she said. "I didn't think it was my cup of tea."

Mary said she entered Miss Western Maryland Outstanding Teen pageant in 2009 at the suggestion of a friend. She competed at the state teen title but did not win.

"Even if you don't win, it's a really good experience - the pubic speaking, the performance experience, which since I really want to be a dancer, a Radio City Rockette, having a dream like that, it's healthy to be on stage," Mary said.

Mary earned the Miss Hagerstown Outstanding Teen title in February and went on to win the state crown at The Maryland Theatre on June 25.

The Miss America Outstanding Teen pageant is Aug. 24 to 28 in Orlando, Fla.

The night before the crayon delivery, Mulligan was splitting her time between collecting the last few rounds of coins and leading a tour of incoming freshman through the Barbara Ingram school.

Would she have been collecting coins for crayons had she not earned the state title?

"I would gladly do this if I didn't have the title," Mary said. "'Anyone could do it. It's motivational to have this title and be a voice. I'm using it to do that. I'm not doing it because I have this title."

Friends and fans of Miss South Carolina Teen Caroline Blanton are invited to help give her a memorable sendoff to the national pageant Saturday from 7:30 p.m.-10 p.m. at the Sidewheeler Restaurant.

Blanton, who beat out 42 other contestants for the state crown in July in Spartanburg, will leave next week for Miss America’s Outstanding Teen competition in Orlando, Fla.

During Saturday’s event Blanton will sing several songs including “Once Upon a Star,” which she will perform during the talent segment of the national competition. The steps Blanton took on the way to winning the state crown will be highlighted in a showcase video that will feature her singing at church when she was a small child and performing in “Annie.” Blanton will also sing a couple of songs with family members.

Several of the people who have played key roles in Blanton’s success have been invited to speak including her voice coach Kathleen Seymour, instructors from the Sally Woody School of Dance, Conway High School principal Porter Kennington, CHS girls’ soccer coach Tony Bombyea, executive directors from the Miss Myrtle Beach Teen Pageant and others.

Blanton will also be recognized by the city of Conway and the Conway Area Chamber of Commerce. Two of her friends and fellow classmates, Dalton Watts and Breanna Barfield, who recently tried out for American Idol will also entertain.

The new Miss America Teen will be crowned Aug. 28, and Blanton hopes to become the second South Carolinian to win the title in three years. Taylor Fitch of Anderson won the competition in 2009.

The state queen is a daughter of Genie and Chris Blanton of Conway. She competed as Miss Myrtle Beach Teen in the state pageant, and was one of the preliminary award winners in evening gown.

Blanton is a rising sophomore at Conway High School, where she is also the reigning Miss CHS.

What are the dates for the National MAOT pageant in Florida?
THe MAOT website is so out of date with only 2009 posts. With all teens so web-savvy, & always on the computer, MAOT's website should be kept up to date & used as a recruiting site!
They could even get past teen contestants to help as webmasters.

Here's some information to answer some of the questions about MAOT pictures. MAOT has taken several steps to try and improve the pageant photos and availability.
MAOT has posted a bunch of the MAOT pictures on Facebook for free. Please take a few seconds to leave some comments. This many pictures have never been posted before.
There's also prints available at www.maot.printroom.com The prices for the Las Vegas pictures are much cheaper.
To clarify about printroom. Brion's pictures are in the groups listed at the top. The gallerys under Brion's are from a different photographer. Please check out the "New" gallerys for addition pictures that aren't included in Brion's groups. The Las Vegas pictures are also listed in the "New" gallerys.
