Date Posted: 18:00:52 03/21/05 Mon In reply to: Evelyn 's message, "Looking for information on the Surname Lleonart" on 18:00:02 01/19/05 Wed The name Lleonart is without question from the Catalan region of Spain, where it also appears as Leonart as early as 460 A.D.; My name was originally Lleonart and I am from Placetas, Cuba. The name Lleonart first appears in Havana in 1763 or 1765, as Juan Bautista Lleonart. I am a direct descendant of Juan Bautista Lleonart, I believe. I changed my name from Rafael Lleonart to Ralph Leonart in 1986 because the former was too complicated. This name, Lleonart, also appears in other Latin American nations such as Costa Rica. There is a very prominent writer in Chile by the name of Marcelo Leonart. He is the author of Mujer Desnuda Fumando en la Ventana. I highly recommend his book, and other works actually, for those who read Spanish. Marcelo leonart is a highly talented artist. There is a very prominent art gallery in Basel known as LeonArt and another gallery in Australia by the name of Lleonart. I have been in contact with Mr. Lleonart in Australia via e-mail and he has indicated to me that he is of Catalan extraction also. Apparently, his family has been in Australia for several generations. Leonart appears in Spain, France and, most often Germany. Here in New York, a well known jazz musician by the name of Jay Leonart is well documented. I believe that his former name was the more clearly Teutonic variant, Leonhart and he changed it to Leonart as I did, probably for the sake of simplicity. There was a very prominent mathematician in Switzerland by the name of Leonart in the 17th century, I believe. But there are several Leonarts in Spain as well. Don Benito Leonart and Yudith Leonart are two variants of the name whom, I believe, currently live in Spain. The most interesting to me is a Vietnamese cartoon named Seravi Leonart. Catalunya and Southern France border and therefore one could see the name crossing the border. We also know that France colonized Vietnam until they lost it in the battle of Die Bien Fu ( Phonetic ). It's fun for me to see an Oriental from as far a Vietnam with my Catalan name. There is, or was, also an interior design firm in Barcelona with the name Lleonart as well as someone by the name of Jordi Lleonart who has written on marine biology issues. His work is in Catalan. Hence, I can only infer what I think it's about from the Spanish cognates. If you have any other information with respect to Lleonart/Leonart, I'd be delighted to hear from you. Please make sure your subject section in the e-mail says RE: Lleonart/Leonart. My address is Ralphleonart@AOL.COM Thanks. Ralph A.
