Subject: A column of a different kind..........

Hey Guys,

I know that many of you (particularly on my Facebook) have been wondering what is going on with me, and why I have not been around very much over the past two weeks. I really wrestled with telling you this because I wasn't entirely sure that it was the right thing to do. Some of you already know what I am about to share and have encouraged me to let my readers know what is going on, but my initial knee jerk reaction was to try and keep this to myself. I didn't want to expose a vein, and wasn't sure that it was the right thing to do.

We go way back you and I. Most of you have been readers of mine since the beginning (2001). I have been truly blessed to have your love and support for so many years. I am so grateful to you. I am truly grateful to my sources out there. Some of the actors themselves have proven to be some of the loveliest people I have ever come to know in my life. Cat, you will always stand out for me because you are beautiful in so many ways. You are so real and genuine. You have helped me in ways you cannot imagine so far. Thank you for that, as I know your schedule is insane. You really are a precious jewel (it's why so many of your fans love you).

As most of you know from reading my interview with SoapZone back in April, I dealt with breast cancer extremely young (in my twenties). Our family has very rare cancer genes that tend to complicate our lives. Last week I learned that the cancer is back in not one, but both breasts. I was not prepared for this and needed to step away to just breathe and attempt to process all of this. To complicate matters, it is a very rare and aggressive form of cancer known as Epitheloid Angiosarcoma. My mammograms and ultrasounds were fine (rather frightening in retrospect). This is a cancer that attacks the blood vessels and has already begun sinking into my breast from the skin down. It has moved from my left breast (where I originally had cancer) to my right breast. It is rare (there are only a handful of cases like this in the United States). It can happen to people with certain genetic markers who have had radiation to their breasts in the past. The incubation period is usually 5-10 years after having the initial radiation. I've spent the past two weeks wishing I had done the Mastectomy instead of what I chose to do years back (Lumpectomy with Radiation) but I can't do that, I have to move forward instead.

I am going for a PET scan to see if it has spread and where. Chemo is not an option for me (would rather not go into the details) and you cannot radiate a breast twice. Surgery is our main option now. They want to do a radical mastectomy with larger margins as soon as possible (within a few weeks if we can get everything scheduled just right). The next month or so is going to be a bit of a blur for me. Because I honestly don't know what to expect, I am letting you know that I will obviously need to skip columns here and there, as I am doing this weekend. It's incredibly hard to focus on anything else right now, however I will get to you what I can as I walk through this. A lot will depend on how I feel and how long of a hospital stay I will have. I will try to get out a column or two before I go into surgery, but they will need to be brief. I will try to keep you updated as much as possible.

I have been blessed to have such lovely readers who have shown me so much love and support over the years. If things don't go very well, I wanted to say that here and now. You have added to my life in so many ways. Sharing scoops and dishing with you over the years has been a lot of fun and I don't regret any of it (even some of the negativity could not take away from all the positives). Hopefully, I will get through this and be able to continue doing what I love so well, but if things do not go as planned, I wanted you to know how much I love you, and how much you guys have meant to me over the years. I will post this on my site at Voy as well, although I know that most of you post over here on my Facebook page instead.

For my female readers out there, please be aware that some of the deadliest forms of breast cancer are not found through a mammogram or ultrasound. The cancer grows in sheets on the breast and will often appear as a rash. I began to see a strange growth on the skin of my left breast (it did not hurt or itch which bothered my Oncologist). I went in to have that breast biopsied, but at the last minute, the surgeon asked me if I wouldn't mind if she obtained tissue samples of the right as well. Like so many women, I would get an itchy rash that would come and go that seemed hormonally related on my right breast. She got biopsies of that one too, and both sides were cancerous. I was told that it stunned even the pathologist who ran the tests again and sent smaller samples to another lab for further testing. Had I not met with this particular surgeon who was so meticulous and observant, I would have never known that the other breast was cancerous as well. Please be aware of any strange growths or rashes that appear on the skin of your breasts. They will undoubtedly send you for a mammogram and an ultrasound (that's if they don't pass it off as dermatitis as so many will do), but only a biopsy can tell the tale when dealing with this form of breast cancer. If you want to do something for me, you will research Inflammatory Breast Cancer, Paget's disease, and Epitheloid Angiosarcoma so that you are fully aware of these forms and how they may appear on the breast. You won't have lumps and they do not show up with a regular mammogram or ultrasound. Please see a dermatologist or breast surgeon immediately if you feel you have anything suspicious like this on your breast that doesn't go away. Insist on a punch biopsy at the very least. If this can save even one life, it was worth exposing that vein and sharing something so very personal with all of you.

I will keep you posted as much as possible. Thank you so much for your many years of friendship. Your love and support has not gone unnoticed. I love you guys. I always will. I leave you for now with fingers crossed and a heart full of hope. XOXO!

Raven,

You are like a dear friend that I only get to meet online through your columns but you have to devote your energy to recovering from this. Do what you can when you can but YOU have to come FIRST !!! Praying for you and wish you a speedy recovery.

Raven, Hang in there, you will get thru this. I have been battling Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma since 2001 & know everything will be good for you. Right now all of it is very hard, but keep a positive attitude & please know that all of us who love you, will be praying for you. I know how much the prayers of so many friends & friends of friends have helped me thru my journey & the same will be true for you. Alot of this isn't so great but please remember, there have been so many advances since your original diagnosis. It is amazing what is possible - even with such a tough diagnosis. You will come thru all of this. We are all here for you!

Raven, I'm wishing for strength and determination for you during this fight you unfortunately have again. You were blessed to find a competent and intuitive surgeon. May you continue to find the best medical professionals to help you win this battle. Knowledge is power. Do anything and everything in your power to beat this.
And on those not so fabulous days in your future, please try to remember: when you need Him most, God will be carrying you in His hands.
Your health is so much more important than backstage scoops from soap operas. While it's always fun for us to get tidbits of info, your only concern should be you. God bless you and update us as you can.

Raven,

I really enjoy reading your columns and feeling a little like a soap "insider".

I was shocked to read about your cancer diagnosis. My husband is toward the end of his battle with a brain tumor, so I have some insight into the cancer experience from the viewpoint of a caregiver. Cancer sucks! It's an unpredictable rollercoaster ride. (As a cancer survivor, you would know this already.)

Please do what you need to do to take care of yourself, whether that's keeping up with your columns or taking a break for awhile.

One last thing... if you're in a city with a Gilda's Club or a Wellness Community, they run amazing support groups for people with cancer.

I'm praying that your surgery goes well and that you have an excellent longterm prognosis.

All my best!

Nancy P

What a shock, one that too many women have to face in their lives but there has been so much progress over the last few years. But the surgeon asking for a second biospy is one of those life-changing meant to be moments that gives me hope that all will turn out well. Sometimes it is something so small that makes all the difference. Try to keep your spirits up and focus on all the positives. Any time you need some encouragement and good wishes, just "drive-by" as you have done so many times in the past and all your friends here will be waiting with open arms and lots of love to give you support. We're also here if you just need to vent or scream. A loyal reader and admiring fan...Brenda Kastner from Montreal

I was looking forward to this week's edition, but I was saddened to learn about your current condition. Please don't worry too much about trying to bring us columns while you're going through this; we completely understand that you're health is your number 1 priority right now, and I'd much rather have you 100% healthy before you get back into the thick of bringing us info. A few years ago, I became a good luck charm for someone very close to me. This link tells the story. Since then, I have gotten four more stones for other people in my life battling cancer, and...so far so good. My record is clean.

I'm going straight over to the Cancer Survivors Park right now! I'm going to get a stone for you and I'm going to carry it with me every waking moment until I find out from you that you've gotten through this ordeal and are on the path to recovery.

You won't come through this unscathed, but you CAN come through it stronger. If anyone can, I know it's you.

I always trust my gut feeling, and my gut is telling me you will be okay. It's going to be a rough journey that I wish to hell you didn't have to go through, but please trust my gut. And never forget my LOVE...and my HOPE!

Your Gordie

P.S. Please don't force yourself to write any columns. All of your energy needs to go to one thing right now. Then, we expect HUNDREDS more columns from you! We'll hold you to it! {{{HUG}}}

Many kinds of cancers run in my family including a rare form of sarcoma of the uterus. I screen for uterine ,bowel and breast cancer ( 2 yearly and bowel every 3-5 years ) since I was in my 30's. I must thank you for the information you provided about angiosarcoma. Continue to talk to us just about how you are feeling, and vent. Dear Raven,

You have my full support. I felt that I had to share this with you. I had a family member that had cancer on her heart and lung and here she is ten years later in full remission. She went to Sloan Kettering in Manhattan. They happen to be the best on the east coast. I know that it is hard, but if you go into this being optimistic it will help you tremendously get through it. The mind is a powerful thing. I just know that you are going to be all right and going to get through this. Sending you lots of love and thinking of you.

I saw the heading for your column and it never occurred to me that your health being at risk was its meaning. When I read you had breast cancer tears popped to my eyes. I quickly banished them and told myself "girl you are going to send nothing but positive thoughts to Raven". We (your fans and friends) are going to be forming an invisible "Hands Across The Nation" to envelope you in love, hope and a return to good health. We love you girl and WE KNOW YOU CAN BEAT THIS!

Forget about the column but whenever you feel up to it, please pop in and let us know how you are doing.

Raven, don't cry. You are not alone, the spirits of people who care about you are standing by your side, invisible yes, but the power they surround you with is strong. Take the bull by the horns and move forward. Don't falter in your determination to beat this disease. Envision God, smiling, standing on a cloud, his hand extended, pointing towards you, palm up. He blows on his hand and a powerful white healing light comes down from heaven and surrounds your body. You drawn in pure, healthy energy in every breath and expell toxic cells with every exhale. Positive thinking is one of your weapons to fight this disease. Faith, great doctors, knowledge and medications are others.

Positive Thinking Keeps you Healthy

"Scientists have demonstrated a connection between our body's immune system and our emotions. The one who is happy and content is less sick. Happy people are not sick as often, because positive thinking strengthens a specific region of the brain. And this region also affects the immune system positively. This was shown by a study with 52 participants by American scientists. This is so true. Watch funny movies, enjoy nature, read the posts from loving fans. Don’t let anything negative you hear about what happened to someone else or may be occurring in your own body affect your determination to get better. Miracles happen all the time."

Read about Lance Armstrong and his determination to beat cancer.

“Anything is possible. You can be told you have a 90-percent chance or a 50-percent chance or a 1-percent chance, but you have to believe, and you have to fight. By fight I mean arm yourself with all the available information, get second opinions, third opinions, and fourth opinions. Understand what has invaded your body, and what the possible cures are. It's another fact of cancer that the more informed and empowered patient has a better chance of long-term survival”

Side effects were also significantly reduced in the T-DM1 group, a factor that was "particularly important and very clinically meaningful," said the study's lead investigator Sara Hurvitz, since far fewer T-DM1 patients opted to stop treatment during the phase II trial.

I only found your column a short time ago, but I've been impressed by your caring and sharing. My mom is a 20+ year breast cancer survivor. Though her cancer had spread into her lymph nodes, she had been determined to beat it and her oncologist told her that attitude was 99% of the cure. From what I've seen, you are one strong woman and this column really proves that. Although you are in a very scary situation, take one day at a time, believe that God will take you by the hand and that you will beat it. There are many of us out here praying for you and that will continue for as long as you need it. Draw love and strength from all of us. It's always here for you. Take care of yourself and your needs and don't worry about anything else. May God help you every step of the way and please let us know how you're doing when you can. HUGS!

Raven,

Years ago I used to start my Saturday mornings with a mug of tea and your column. It was my favorite way to begin the weekend.

I'm very distressed to hear that the cancer has returned. If well wishes could cure you and add years to your life, you would live to be a 110!

Cancer sucks. Every type runs in my family, has claimed most of them and I always feel that I am living on borrowed time. But then, aren't we all? The really important part of life is to make use of the time that we DO have. And you have to know that you have made EXCELLENT use of yours. Not only for the humor and joy (and scoops!) that you have brought to your cyber fans over the years, but I can't imagine you being anything other than a GIFT to your family and friends.

So while I wish you love and courage through your journey, AND THAT YOU WILL BE CANCER FREE IN A VERY SHORT WHILE, what I wish for you most is wisdom and a peace beyond all understanding.

I'll be praying for you daily.

Angela

You are the second person in as many days to share their cancer story with me. There are no words of comfort that I or anyone can give you that will help make the fear disappear. When my Dad was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer, we had a saying which I will now share with you. "You are not dying today. No one is guaranteed tomorrow. Take this challenge one minute, one moment, one breath at a time and God and family will see you through."

Know that you have thousands of fans thinking of you. The power of prayer is on your side. I will keep you in my thoughts and pray that God will give you the strength you need to battle through all that is to come.

Thank you for all your info on inflammatory breast cancer. Many doctors do not recognize what is wrong with the patient until the cancer is so advanced. If we can inform people and save even one life, all is not lost. We have to be our own doctor/advocate whatever. In our country you must take your health in your own hands. Don't look back. My friend did everything right, masectomy everything and still the breast cancer returned in the same breast, this is also very unusual per her doctor. I have always enjoyed your info, your humor, and your love of our beloved soaps. God bless you. I will pray for you.

I am truly blessed to have such lovely readers and friends out here. Believe me when I say that each and every post has touched me deeply. You guys are amazing. I know that you all have troubles of your own and yet you have gone out of your way to be so incredibly loving and supportive. I will never forget the love you have shown me here during this dark time in my life. I mean that sincerely. The outpouring here and at Facebook has had me in tears many times over during the past couple of weeks.

For those of you not on my Facebook page, I just received news on my PET Scan, so I will share here as well. They see focal activity in my spleen, liver, and in the T10 section of my spine (very mild on T10). They are on the fence as to whether this is metastatic cancer or inflammation from my body fighting off the cancer in my breasts. They know this type of rare cancer (Epitheloid Angiosarcoma) usually goes to the lungs first. I won't do chemo either way. It's a gray area for now (will repeat PET after surgery). They are trying to get me a rush date for surgery right now because it is visibly spreading on my left breast. We need to get to that first and quickly before it manifests in my lungs. Will keep you posted. Just trying to remain calm here (failing miserably, but doing the best I can). Your love and support has meant more to me than you will ever know.

I was deeply touched to find that you guys began a fund in my honor through the Susan Komen Foundation. All of that money will go to breast cancer research and may help our future generations to beat this thing once and for all. I am going to try and fight this with everything I have, and your prayers and incredible support has given me strength to do just that. ♥

Just know you are on my mind & in my prayers. If you have a chance to check your Facebook messages, please let me know if the information I sent you is helpful and/or an avenue you may want to explore. As a 12 year survivor of Stage IIc/IIIa BC, I have met a few survivors of inflammatory breast cancer; one woman had 4 recurrences over a 20 year period. There's no reason why you can't be one of the miracles in the small percentage with longevity. Try & keep the faith, and at times when it's too much, know there are so many of us lifting you up & sending you positive energy. As mentioned in my other reply, please don't hesitate if there's anything I can do to help.

From one fellow cancer warrior to another, you are in my thoughts and prayers. When you have a chance, please check Facebook messages; I've sent you a few, hopefully with some helpful info. Please feel free to contact me at my email address; I won't give out contact info on Facebook (other than email address). I'm hoping I can help you out. Dana-Farber in Boston HAS a program for women with Inflammatory Breast Cancer. Please read your messages for more info regarding that & don't hesitate to reach out for help. May God bless you.

Oh Raven! My thoughts and prayers are definitely with you. I remember you back in the beginning - you were one of the posters who inspired me to register and start spreading my opinion. I love your column, I love you and I'm holding you in my thoughts. Get well my friend!

Raven, you are the best, taking time to update us. I don't know where you live but there are specialists all over the country working miracles every day. My good friend is doing well after stage 3 inflammatory breast cancer, diagnosed 3 years ago. There is hope. Love to you.
