Hi Liz. As much as we as Friesian fanatics admire Friesians with alot of hair, it really does not matter at all in the scheme of things.

My friend who has trained Freisians for the keur for 12+ years once had a mare in training who had beautiful conformation and a stunning trot, rubbed out most of her mane before the keur, leaving just a few wisps. So they just buzz cut the entire thing..and she went in without a mane at all!

The judges could have cared less. The mare was phenomenal, and I believe she went Ster. Although they do score the horses on their hair, it not a heavily valued trait, and certainly if you have a good horse, it won't impact their score. Particularly if it is only due to rubbing...the judges know what they are looking at, and if your horse has a thick tail, forelock and feathers, but no mane, they aren't likely to mark your horse down for it.

Remember, they are judging on conformation and movement, not cosmetics, like an in-hand class might.
