Hi Cathy,

I have several mares who have never been shod, and some who haven't been shod in years, and I have no problems with them at all. I breed them every third year, and ride dressage on them when not in foal. I do mostly keep them off tarred and cobblestone roads though, and the farrier comes to trim their hooves every 8 weeks. I also tried it with my Lusitano stallion, and his hooves deteriorated VERY quickly, so the shoes sadly had to go back on.

So go for it.

Kind Regards
Margarethe
