Hi Cathy,

If you have a Friesian with good solid hooves. Which it sounds like you do. I would just keep him barefoot. It's fine if your working him on a soft surface. But, if you notice that he's getting soor. Then I would put shoes on him. Oh, also put shoe's on him if you plan on going on any hard surfaces consistently. Roads, gavel, etc. you get the idea. Also, trim your horse's hooves according to his natural angulation of his hoof. Don't try to trim him some freaky way that's not natural. Just my thoughts. I keep all my Friesians barefoot. They've done all well without shoes. But, yet again I make sure that they have their feet trimmed regularly. I also make sure that their diet is correct so they can grow good solid hooves.
