>Hi Rachel,
One of our friesians developed a skin condition last summer and it sounds similar to what your friesian is experiencing. After much trial and error, and a summer of our boy being quite miserable, the vet recommended a biopsy and culture of the skin in the area affected. The results were that he has a hyper sensitivity to house flies, stable flies and mosquitos. Due to his severe scratching they became infected and he developed a secondary bacterial infection. The vet prescribed Doxycline, an antibiotic, and Betagen, a topical spray which contains Genamicin Sulfate with Betamethasone Valerate. THe spray helped him so much. He's had a great winter, no problems at all. Our vet is prescribing an antihistamine so we can be proactive this season and I am keeping a fly sheet on him, as well as added the supplement Bug Check, which a friesian friend says helps her horse immensely with the flies and bugs. Sorry this is so long, but if I were you, I'd have a biopsy done, I wish I hadn't waited so long to have mine done.

Best of luck to you! Sue

My friesian will be 2 this August. She gets these
>small patches of hair loss on random parts of her body
>(her rump, shoulder, neck, etc). She will have
>anywhere form 1-5 patches at a time, usually no more
>than 1 inch by 1 inch in size. Sometimes the skin is
>flakey & scaley underneath, & other times it is not.
>She is on quality grass hay, gets a vitamin & mineral
>supp daily, and gets ground flax daily. She is
>dewormed regularly, and I have tried antimicrobial
>prays such as eqyys micro-tek. She has access to
>shelter to get out of the elements. As soon as the
>patches go away & the hair grows back a new one will
>pop up! She looks very healthy, good weight, nice
>shiny coat (other than her patches). I have read that
>friesians can be prone to skin conditions, does anyone
>have any advice?
>Thanks
