One of our friesians developed a skin condition last summer and it sounds similar to what your friesian is experiencing. After much trial and error, and a summer of our boy being quite miserable, the vet recommended a biopsy and culture of the skin in the area affected. The results were that he has a hyper sensitivity to house flies, stable flies and mosquitos. Due to his severe scratching they became infected and he developed a secondary bacterial infection. The vet prescribed Doxycline, an antibiotic, and Betagen, a topical spray which contains Genamicin Sulfate with Betamethasone Valerate. THe spray helped him so much. He's had a great winter, no problems at all. Our vet is prescribing an antihistamine so we can be proactive this season and I am keeping a fly sheet on him, as well as added the supplement Bug Check, which a friesian friend says helps her horse immensely with the flies and bugs. Sorry this is so long, but if I were you, I'd have a biopsy done, I wish I hadn't waited so long to have mine done.

My friesian will be 2 this August. She gets these
