All great suggestions.. I agree the most important is to get a tailer. But if he is an easy-going guy and whips don't really bother him.. tell the tailer to put some coins in an old coke can, and/or tie a plastic bag to the lunge whip, and don't forget to yell and whoop! Lots of noise helps get that forward momentum, and as was mentioned.. be sure you have a long lead line (perhaps with a chain) doing this the first time in case he gets strong. Once Friesians get a head of steam, it can be hard to keep up with short little people legs. Also.. remember..NO cantering allowed. Correct him as soon as he breaks to canter and quickly (as is possible) bring him back to a forward trot.

In between trotting sessions, bring him back to a walk and try to relax and lengthen his stride. Alot of horses who have not had too much practice in-hand get very hot, tense and short-strided after trotting and it is very difficult to get them to have a nice four-beat walk afterwards, which is very important should your horse be called back for consideration in the final go-round.

Ultimately you want your horse to know that the rattle of a can (all runners carry these) and the crack of a whip means TROT! but that as soon as their handler asks them to slow down to a walk..it is back to normal, quiet, well-behaved time.

Good luck!
