I had that problem last year with my stallion Wessel, the mare we had him sharing his field with chewed out 2 big chunks one in the middle and the other nearer the top of his neck - I nearly cried, it was right down to his elbow and really thick - I had to hog the lot, so he just had his forelock left!!! Looked like a hedgehog for ages, but it is about 4 inches long now, look on the stallion page of my site and there are a whole load of pics of him last summer in hedgehog mode!!!
