Subject: different training...
In reply to: malinda 's message, "new Friesian" on 22:12:43 03/04/08 Tue

I wouldn't blame the European trainers... Blame the American importers/sellers, who know exactly where the horses come from, saw videos of them before they bought the horse (to see how well- or not- the horse is trained) And THEN make up wonderfull stories to sell the horse sight unseen to a not-so-experienced Friesian-owner-to-be

I'm from Holland, worked in the US for a while (for a Friesian importer- so yes, I sold Friesians to american people, I know what it’s like), used to work at Friesian barns here in Holland. I feel a little offended, because we do have excellent trainers here in Holland, (remember Anky, natural or not, she is still an olympic champion. And Imke/Tineke Bartels.. They work with Holland's best Natural Horsemanship guy regularly AND are very succesfull at the highest level)
Friesians tend to be a little more on the lazy side than warmbloods. They are usually quite easy to handle and work with, which makes them pretty suitable for inexperienced or just weak riders. (a young warmblood would bolt with a very unbalanced rider, most friesians will just slow down) Because they have that easy temper, most of them are quite safe to ride shortly after they were broken in under the saddle. Training a horses'body, balance him, make him stronger, that takes a huge amount of time (for any horse). If the seller in Holland has a horse in training for, let's say, a year, the horse will be much more expensive. Time is money.

American importer won't buy the welltrained expensive horse because he won't be able to make a good enough profit- since 99% of his clients can't see/feel the difference between a welltrained horse and just a safe not-so-trained one. No sense for the importer to spend extra money on good horses if he can sell a bad one for the same kind of money.

Here in Holland we do not consider a horse well-trained if you can just sit on it without getting launched off immediately. I worked at barns that sold horses to the US. With honest stories. No fairytales. Just videos, facts, no great ‘FEI potential’ promises.... That’s the stuff the importers make up, and the clients are oh-so-willing to believe! They fall for the great photos, fairytale looks, and amaaaazing bloodlines.
I had clients in the US, wanting to buy a horse, that didn’t have a clue how to ride english style. (happened all the time..) They would neckrein one of my very well trained 2nd/3rd level horses, and then tell me that the horse is not trained properly, because the horse didn’t understand those aids. Or they tried to canter, almost bouncing off the horse trotting because they weren’t very well-balanced, and blame the horse for not cantering. And I was an amazing rider when the horse would canter (and do flying lead changes) on a tiny aid. Well I’m not. But a different riding style means adapting, for both horse and rider, can’t blame a foreigner for not speaking the same language!
