Subject: Lunging/long lining at 2
In reply to: Rachel 's message, "Light longing at 2, ok or not?" on 19:36:50 06/18/08 Wed

I got my friesian as a yearling and started lunging (VERY LIGHTLY) at 2 with no issues. It was mostly at the walk & very little trot. More for the discipline than the exercise. I agree with Helen that they are too slow to mature to risk doing too much, too soon. My main point of working a little bit in the round pen was to get him used to the bridle so I could start long lining him (at the walk outside of the round pen). Once he was good enough to leave the round pen, I would just long line him in mostly straight lines. A friend of mine had a youngster that she lunged too much at 2 & their stifle started sticking. The horse outgrew it, but she always wondered if it the lunging caused a big set back in her horse's training....
Good luck! - Becky
