Under Aged Drinking Bust in Bloomsburg

Students started a new school year Monday at Bloomsburg University but before class even began, police raided an underage beer bash. More than 50 students were arrested and police promise more citations and a crackdown on underage drinking.

"We do have a reputation for off-campus parties that put students at high risk," Bloomsburg University President Preston Herring. That reputation was reinforced at a Bloomsburg University off-campus apartment over the weekend. A beer party was underway when police moved in.

Andrew Gideon, 22, was there. "It was a little bit of panic and confusion at first because no one wants to get in trouble, especially underage people," said Gideon. Police found 100 people inside a beer party. Of the 56 people cited, most were university students. Officers promised more citations. "It is a big deal. The alcohol abuse is rampant and we take efforts to protect the youth of our community," said Police Chief Leo Sokoloski.

Police and university officials have cracked down on illegal beer parties. Two years ago officers were pelted with rocks and bottles by drunken students. The university tore down an off-campus apartment complex last year that was a magnet for problems. Police said the trouble makers are in the minority.

"It's just a bunch of kids having fun. They take it so seriously. It's not that big of a deal, you know what I mean?" said student Jason Burke.

"People are here to have a good time and it's safe," added student Jason Clark. He said students shouldn't be allowed to break the law, but maybe stretch it.
