Subject: A Song For Her

Was listening again to "A Song For Her", from the basement tape last night. I liked this one the first time I heard it, and it's starting to grow on me even more. The musical terminology is pretty clever - reminiscent of the ballet terms he used in "Dancing Shoes". Also, for some reason it reminds me a little of "More Than Ever" - just something about the courus.

Anyway, I was trying to transcribe the lyrics, but some of it I just can't get. If anyone's up for it, you could help me out by filling in the missing pieces and letting me know where I went wrong. This is how I heard it:

She keeps singing songs
that I just don't know
And I keep on writing songs
that just don't seem to show
the way ?????????????

She sings silly songs
that make me love to laugh
And I sing sorry songs
that don't explain the half
of what I feel for her

There's a song for her and a song for me
Parallel notes but no harmony
There's a silver sky and a crimson sea
??????? I hear but no melody

And she gves me her songs ?????????
And I give her my songs ?(as sacraments)?
And when we try to sing together
It all ends up in dissonance

We climb separate scales
that are just a pitch apart
She can catch the wind
but I can't catch her heart
So I must change my song and ????????

There's a song for her and a song for me
Parallel notes but no harmony
There's a crimson sea and a silver sky
??????? I hear but no melody

And she gives me her songs ?????????
And I give her my songs ?(as sacraments)?
When we try to sing together
Whoa, it all ends up in dissonance

And she gives me her songs ?????????
And I give her my songs ?(as sacraments)?
And when we try to sing together
Whoa, it all ends up in dissonance

There's a song for her
And a song.....for...me

first pass ~ will listen again.....

the way things really are

echoes I hear but no melody

She gives me her songs of innocence

so I must change my song and move on

Thanks, mountainbird!! I think you got them all on the first pass. When I listen now, I can hear all the words you provided (with the exception of "move on" - no matter how many times I listen, I still hear "moolong", which makes no sense at all. So it's got to be "move on", which makes perfect sense). That verse is my favorite part of the song, and now I can sing it (using the word "sing" very loosely), and not have to feel ridiculous singing "moolong". Many thanks for taking the time to listen and reply.

Also while listening again, I noticed another mistake of mine. I've decided that he sings "that don't explain BUT half", rather than "THE half". A minor difference, but I guess it's more grammatically correct. Or is it? I've never been very good with grammar, so I'm not sure, but either way, I'm pretty sure now that he says "but" and not "the".

I can just picture him sitting in that basement singing this. Such a hopeless romantic even then.

My pleasure, Kel. I've been in a rut for the last twelve months the same way and I know all it will take is a fresh ear.

I listened for "BUT half" and I'm not hearing the "t" so I'm staying with "the." Either/or, the difference doesn't amount to much. In a grammatical sense, it's more awkward than incorrect but writers, especially those of song, take poetic license to make small distinctions that can greatly impact the message. So sing it loud and enjoy yourself.

I guess you already have the chords, yes?

LOL...Are you kidding? Of course not. I was counting on you. But it's not that I haven't tried. I've been playing around with D & G and various alterations, but that's about it. Am I even close? If you've got it worked out, I sure would appreciate it.

I didn't get that far but I will now that I know you don't have them. Stay tuned.

Thank you. You have a kind soul. I will stay tuned - and try my best to stay IN tune. So whenever you get a chance, no hurry.

And speaking of shy young cowboys, (well okay, you weren't speaking of shy young cowboys, but just to throw it out there, I'm kinda partial to that one too. Not that that's a hint or anything, just throwing it out there)

Kelly :)
