Thank you for the information about the book, Mobird.
That makes us feel a little better. As Brett said on
Schumaker's web page, there are no words now to describe
the shock and sadness.

The end of the week, last week, on Deer Isle it was quiet and ink-dark at night, with beautiful stars in the sky. There was less than two ft. of snow and it blanketed the trees and ground. A yellowish half-moon hung like a open bucket and lay at one point, right near the horizon and shone on the water. The beauty of the island at night was surreal, as many seasonal residents have left, so there are less lights at night to pollute the sky. On the morning Dan died, the snow started coming down hard and as many of you may have heard, it turned into a big blizzard -the biggest this year so far. But all was quiet, peaceful, and lovely, perhaps just as Dan would have wanted.

May he rest in peace in the quiet Maine wilderness he loved, and may he sail forever the soft breezes of his beloved Reach.

Our love goes out to his sweet Jean and her courage during all of this ~

Mainer, I hope you don't mind the question. Do you live in Stonington? It's such a beautiful place...I visited several years ago with my brother because he said that I had to see it. After getting there we changed all our plans and just stayed for the entire week. At that time I had no idea that Dan had a home in the area, and that most likely he was there when we were (mid-September).

I can see why Dan loved it so.

Thanks, Mainer, for the description of the island that morning. I was picturing an angry, turbulant storm quite like my feelings.

Yes, terra, it's quite a beautiful place. I suspect the essence of Dan will always be there.
