This tribute CD is so good, even better than I expected. We’ve heard all these songs before, (with the exception of Michael Ruff’s Wonderful Life), but the collaborations and performances on this make it a really special collection of songs.
Dan does a great job with "Part of the Plan". He’s really rockin’ and his vocals are awesome. I love Russ Kunkel on the drums – just like the old days. We also get Waddy Wachtel on guitar, and a nice blend of backup vocals by Joe Walsh, Graham Nash, Rosemary Butler & Valerie Carter. Great live track . I think it’s better than the live version on Greetings.
There’s an awesome performance by Bonnie Raitt of "Love Has No Pride", with Freebo on bass and Crosby & Nash singing backup. Bonnie always does this song with powerful emotion, but this performance absolutely blew me away.
Jackson does a beautiful solo performance of "For A Dancer". I love that song, and it’s truly poignant and fitting for the occasion.
I loved Emmylou’s "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues".
Another favorite was Crosby, Stills, & Nash’s harmony vocals on the Beatles "In My Life".
Almost everyone joins in on "You’ve Got A Friend" and "Lotta Love", which really gives you a feel for the spirit of the show. Love hearing all those voices together.
Those are the highlights for me, but there’s more and it’s all good. Jackson also does "Running On Empty", Joe Walsh does "Rocky Mountain Way", Carole King plays "Up On The Roof", Linda Ronstadt sings "Blue Bayou", Bonnie Raitt also does "Cold Cold Cold", Crosby, Stills, & Nash also do "Southern Cross", Jimmy Buffett does "Margaritaville", and Michael Ruff plays a song he wrote for Nicolette called "Wonderful Life". Russ plays drums on most every song, and another old favorite, Waddy Wachtel plays electric guitar on most of them.
If anyone is debating whether to buy it or not, I think it’s definitely worth it. It’s a treat to hear all these fine artists playing and singing together. The booklet that’s included has a little update and dedication from Russ written in 2005, and there’s a longer piece on Nicolette and the tribute concert by Paul Gurian. It also includes a larger version of the group photo of all the artists together. Besides all that, the proceeds from the CD will benefit the UCLA Children’s Hospital. It’s money well spent.
