Thanks for the kind words. I really didn't expect the article to be so focused on ~me~, but more on the work of the West-Ark church in Guyana, South America (not Ghana -- it's in Africa). You can read the article at

Hey Michael, I figured Ghana and Guyana were the same thing, isn't that what we learned in Ms. Clark's geography class in 7th grade? I remember spending more making a book cover than studying for the class. She was really something!

I remember Ms. Clark as a real headcase. She gave me a D for my semester when I missed two weeks to be batbay for the Cubs. All the other teachers gave me some slack and good grades.

Richie, I remember Ms. Clark arguing with Chris Presfield (betcha haven't heard that name in a while) over the Vietnam war. She defended it, Presfield said we should get out in no uncertain terms. I also remember Ralph Jean Hudson arguing with her that trout tasted better than tuna. He was adament, probably because He didn't care for her that much (which wasn't unusual) and she finally gave in and said okay trout taste better. It's amazing what you can remember from days so far gone by.

One day in Bob Watt's seventh grade science class, Chris Presfield decided he had to go to the restroom. When Chris didn't return, Mr. Watts got up from his desk with his paddle and went in search of Chris. The rest of us in the classroom heard a loud argument going on out in the hallway between the teacher and student, and it attracted the attention of Coach Wray. While one teacher bent him over and the other paddled, Chris screamed "YOU CAN'T HIT ME!" which was immediately followed by the sound of a very loud WHACK! Chris screamed who knows how many times, and every time he did, the WHACK followed.

It was almost as funny as seeing the look on Martha Harton's face when Mark Sims jumped out the window.

Guess who has that paddle that had holes drilled in it! Not sure why I have it or how I got it but it is at my house!

Mike,

Remember when Martha Harden was going to get married and everbody was making a big to-do about it, and she never got married. And the time someone stuck some shoes pointing half out under a door in the clothes closet in her class, and she stood there and yelled, "come out of there, now" over and over.

Yes, I can still see Mark Sims climbing out the window, with Martha yelling, "You come back here."

And remember how bad her fill-in-the-blank tests were. She would read the test out loud while we had to figure what she was leaving out? She and Ms. Clark were stranger than rangers.
