Heh, don't you mean Kathy Turney. You're confusing me. I remember your mother driving that Ford T-Bird around town way back when. The last time that I can really remember seeing you was at a party at Barbara Bennett's parent's lakehouse during our senior year.

I can remember you in the 6th grade talent contest at Forest Heights doing some ditty with a record playing in the backgroud. Am I right? Heh, how about you and Ralph Hudson. Huh!

I go to church with one of your relatives by marriage, I believe, Becky Brisco. She still is young and attractive. I'm not. (O.K. Well maybe I'm attractive.)

The classic memory that reminds many of you was your little petite "sneezes."

I bet you drive a T-Bird now.

Oh MY Goodness! I haven't laughed that good in a while. How are you~Greg? I remember you and your band practicing in the garage in Robinwood Addition. You guys were AWESOME. Quite the place to gather and ride our bikes. I wonder how hard it would be to bike up that hill now. Hey, does anybody sled down Central? We would probably get arrested. Kathi

You know, this would be the perfect time to sled down Central. But you know this is 2011 and there is traffic, back in 1973 I can remember Linda Erwin, her brother John and me sledding down the hill without worry of traffic. I remember running into Bob Breit's Saint Bernard. It was like hitting a wall. He didn't move a bit.

Ah yes, that band. You know we made a lot of noise in this neighborhood. We named ourselves "Undergroud Society" and Bob Briet's band across the street was "Tomorrow's Reality". Rebellious and deep names, huh. I can't believe we got away with that much racket in the neighborhood back then. But that was the norm during that time.

Great to hear from you. I hope that others chime in to share memories with you.

I know that there is alot of terrible weather going on around the country right now. We have had over ten inches of rain here in Harrison over a four day period. It's the worst I've seen since we were first graders during the flood of 1961. If it wasn't for the higher levee, it might have been as bad as '61 here. You can probably see pictures of the flood waters on the Harrison Daily Times website. They were even doing water rescues in the street in front of Fed Ex. The city pool ran over and flooded much of Pine Street and Stephenson and Central intersection. Lightning knocked out my phone, cable, and internet. It just seemed to never let up.

Speaking of floods, someone posted a 13 minute video on YouTube that was recorded in May of 1961. The video surveyed the damage to downtown Harrison in the aftermath of the 1961 flood. It was a reminder of many things, including Hudson's on the square and people in lines at the hospital waiting for their shot.

This is the video URL that I copied and pasted. I'm not sure it will work. If not, it's sure worth finding it. It's the best video of the '61 flood that I've ever seen. Better that the video that I have that my parents took. Thanks Kevin for the heads up.

----- FORWARDED MESSAGE -----
Hey Joe,
I've been working on our 40th Class Reunion [1971] and we're inviting the classes of 70, 72 and 73. We're not sending invitations to all the other classes, but going to try and spread it through word of mouth, paper, Facebook, etc.
The reunion is going to be July 2nd at John Paul's at 7PM. If you don't mind, help me spread the word to your class so hopefully we'll have a good attendance. Eddie Nicholson's band the Big 'Uns will be performing. If you haven't heard them, they're really good! There will be heavy hors d'oeuvres, a cash bar, and the cost is $50 a couple and $30 single.
Let me know if you need any more info about the reunion. I hope you and Mary Jane will be able to come along with many others from all the other classes!
No RSVP needed, just want to get the word out there and hopefully have a houseful to visit with!

Greg,
I'm sure you remember the time that the motorcycle rider traveling east on Park Ave decided not to make the turn onto Circle Drive and managed travel through your front yard, made his way between two trees only to crash into your living room window in the middle of the night. Who was that masked rider?

Pat,

His name was L.E. Stapleton. I had heard his Triumph 650 running up and down Park Avenue all night. It was so loud that I had trouble sleeping. Finally I went to sleep. I remember being in the middle of a dream when I heard this big crash. My dad woke me up and told me a motorcycle had run into the house. I thought yeah, right, go back to bed.

But then I pulled myself out of bed and went downstairs to hear Stapleton lying outside beneath our windows using all manner of vulgarities while bleeding all over his face. I remember him cursing so bad my dad would keep telling him to be quiet. But, he was drunk and that was the reason for the accident. He wasn't even aware that he had not turned right or left but ran directly into my downstairs bedroom. Fortunately, I was sleeping upstairs in another bedroom at the time.

We found pieces of his hair in the hallway and all the way into the family room. They say that the doctors sewed up his face for about three hours. Ross Fowler was the first doctor over to the house, simply because he lived across the street.

My dad never pressed any sort of charges against Stapleton. We just let the insurance pay for the crashed in wall and windows. You know, two foot to the right or left and he would have hit solid brick and died instantly because he wasn't wearing a helmet.

It sure was a weird experience that night.

Are we moving forward? Not sure yet. Harrison just voted to go wet. The main 'good' thing I can see is now we get the tax money that Taney Co. Mo, Caroll Co. and Marion Co. have been taking away from us by our citizens buying their liquor in those countys. I know not many people think like that. This could help the roads and schools a lot. What do you think?

I think morality is more important than money.
No amount of increased revenues can offset the damage than alcohol can do to families. As someone who manages rental property, I have filled trash bags full of beer cans and liquor bottles imbibed by people who have no concept of God in their lives, whose only biblical defense of drinking is that Jesus turned water into wine --so go ahead, open a wine store, sell wine only--and the highlight of their week is when they get off work on Friday is to go to the package store so they can get drunk.

Greg, you are indeed right--the excessive consumption of alcohol can cause great damage to the individual, friends, family members and society at large. I know this first- hand because my uncle, John Shouse, who you may remember, was an alcoholic for many years. I saw on a weekly basis the damage that he did to himself, my grandparents and my mother. What you may not have known about him was that had a law degree, and was a good lawyer when sober. And Harrison was dry all of those years John was an alcoholic, a compelling testament to the proposition that banning the sale of alcohol will not prevent alcohol abuse. What can prevent alcohol abuse is treatment. So rather than take away the freedom that adults should have to make responsible choices to purchase and consume alcohol in moderation (which recent scientific research has found can be beneficial to a person's health), it is better policy to permit the sale of alcohol and use tax revenues derived from the sale of alcohol to fund treatment programs for alcoholics, many of which treatment programs have proven successful. I only wish those treatment programs had been prevalent when my uncle was alive. Instead, the treatment program during those times was a prohibition on the sale of alcohol, and that treatment program did not work then, and it does not work now.

Kevin,
Today, there are many different programs available to help combat the scurge of alcoholism, whether a county is wet or dry. During the time your uncle John Shouse lived I would imagine that modern subtance abuse clinics were few and far between. To say that we can use the revenues from the sale of liquor to treat alcholism, is to me much like saying we could legalize prostitution and use the revenues from that to treat sex addiction. (By-the-way, and I kid you not, there is a billboard that was put up during the election here that say's "Let's Get Wet," Gentlemen's Club, contact Mary, and then there is a P.O. Box number.)

Don't forget there is a moral component here, also. Romans 14:21 says-- “It is good neither to eat meat nor drink wine nor do anything by which your brother stumbles or is offended or is made weak." If our actions cause another to stumble into sin, we will bear the guilt of that someday.

It is clear from my own past experiences that even as adults, no matter what we might think, when we start drinking sooner or later it can just be a matter of time before drunkeness occurs. That is an unending tightrope that those who chose to drink spend there lives on. The falling off is just a matter of time.

Preliminarily, Greg, there are many people who I have known for years who have consumed alcohol in moderation with no discernible adverse effects and, as pointed out in my previous post, recent medical research has indicated that such moderate drinking can be beneficial to a person's health.

I agree,as evidenced by my previous post, that excessive consumption of alcohol can have insidious effects on the person consuming alcohol as well as others. But if we adopt your line of reasoning, we could easily justify a prohibition on the sale of junk food and drink, which is the leading cause of childhood obesity, and which over the next 30 years will bankrupt this country due to the medical expenses that will be incurred to treat heart disease, diabetes, and other illnesses that are caused by these unhealthy diets, not to mention the misery these illnesses will cause and the premature deaths which will occur. And these are children who are consuming these foods and are therefore more deserving of our protection than adults. We also could consider imposing laws requiring every person to get a certain amount of exercise each day, since the sedentary lifestyle lead by many persons is similarly resulting in chronic health problems that are detrimental to them as well as society, with all the ramifications described above. So rather than the tightrope that you allude to, the real problem I see is the slippery slope that you are walking that taken to its logical conclusion could result in government control over many aspects of our lives. People need to be responsible for their own actions--we should not needlessly enable them but by the same token we should not unduly restrict the rights of the mass of people merely because some people cannot, for whatever reason, moderate their actions.

I disagree that the prohibition of prostitution is analogous to the prohibition of the sale of alcohol. I believe all reasonable people will agree that no act of prostitution is morally defensible. However, most reasonable people will agree that alcohol consumed in moderation by an adult is not only morally defensible but, as pointed out earlier, can be healthy. But if you beg to differ based on the quote from Romans, I direct your attention to John 2, which tells the story of the wedding in Cana when Jesus turned water into wine. That story has a special poignancy for me since my wife and I had our marriage blessed in Cana 10 years ago.

This is my last post on this subject--I will let you have the last word.

Well I guess I'll get in my last word also against the sale of alcohol.

Kevin, to use the wedding at Cana to excuse the selling of vodka, rum, tequila, Jack Daniels and the like just doesn't work.

An examination of New Testament passages shows that the Greek word "oinos" may mean either wine or grape juice, and only the context can show which (as is the case with all generic words). In Ephesians 5:18, for instance,
in the phrase, ‘And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit,’ "oinos" obviously refers to alcoholic wine…. In John 2 [when Jesus turned water into wine], we must determine which translation best fits the context, suits what is revealed in other places about the character of Jesus, and which does not contradict other Bible passages.

Wine was a basic commodity in biblical times. But there is no biblical justification for the heavy liquor traffic of modern times.

You know, Ralph Hudson fought his heart out to lead this charge against legalizing the package stores and the like in Boone County. Don Smith, whom we also went to school with was also a hard worker in the movement. But it took a stranger who has only lived twelve years in Harrison and who is a member of a church with a liquor license to adversly affect the character of this community which has maintained a decent lifestyle for most for the majority of my lifetime. When the vote was finally in, almost split evenly by-the-way, Harrison-- honored by several publications over the years as one of best places to live-in my opinion took a step backward. Those who wished Harrison wet are safe now in their desires. I doubt it will ever turn back.

Interesting conversation here. All I have to say is that if someone wants to drink they will. You will not stop it from having a dry county. I do not drink and haven't in many years, but everyone has some vice. It is good to know we have a forgiving God.

I know that you, Ralph and many others who agree with your position feel sincerely about this issue but do not resign yourselves to the proposition that Harrison will become a less desirable place to live as a result of this vote. Even though I have not lived in Harrison since the 1970's, I have visited often while my dad was still living. Harrison is a special place for several reasons, but the primary reason is the people who live there. That will not change. Consequently, I have no reason to believe that Harrison will change for the worse as a result of this vote.

Maybe next time we can talk about something not as polarizing, like the fall colors in Harrison, hiking around the Harrison area, or the old times.

Take care.

Kevin, it reminds me of the time that you and I went back and forth in the Forest Heights spelling bee for what seemed forever. I finally became really tired and fumbled in an attempt to spell the word "grease." I think that I spelled it "greese." I remember walking down the hall despondent, and hearing Mrs. Tatum in her third grade class making all of the students spell "grease." But, I kept my head up, walking down the hall to go outside and clean the erasers.

Just to clear something up here,I talked to an employee of the sign company who put up the sign that read "Let's Get Wet"(with the outline of a martini glass in the background)that continues with the line "Bottoms Up" Gentlemens Club, contact Mary--with an address.) "Bottoms Up" is an obvious sexual reference as well as an image of people turning the glasses up while imbibing alcohol. My friend who works for the sign company talked with Tiffany, the designer of the sign who could barely stand to draw it out, given all of it's demeaning references, especially to women. The designer was vehement that she didn't put vote dry on the sign, as well as my friend who drove by and took a second look yesterday just to make sure this rumor has no merit. I myself have glanced at it four or five times, out of exasperation, and never noticed any "vote dry" designation on the sign. The only reason that I could see someone would slip "vote dry" on the sign would be that sombody
believed the advertisment was a good reason to vote dry.

I know something about the person who paid for this sign to be put up, and their goal was if they received enough applicants that they good indeed start the afor named Gentlemen's Club somewhere in the area once the county became wet.

Some have even called me telling me that Ralph Hudson had the sign put up. Yeah, right!

If people would quit trying to see things that they want to see to excuse their opposing point of view maybe we could read the handwriting on the wall and see the possible domino effect making Boone County wet can have.

I remember Ms. Clark as a real headcase. She gave me a D for my semester when I missed two weeks to be batbay for the Cubs. All the other teachers gave me some slack and good grades.

Richie, I remember Ms. Clark arguing with Chris Presfield (betcha haven't heard that name in a while) over the Vietnam war. She defended it, Presfield said we should get out in no uncertain terms. I also remember Ralph Jean Hudson arguing with her that trout tasted better than tuna. He was adament, probably because He didn't care for her that much (which wasn't unusual) and she finally gave in and said okay trout taste better. It's amazing what you can remember from days so far gone by.

One day in Bob Watt's seventh grade science class, Chris Presfield decided he had to go to the restroom. When Chris didn't return, Mr. Watts got up from his desk with his paddle and went in search of Chris. The rest of us in the classroom heard a loud argument going on out in the hallway between the teacher and student, and it attracted the attention of Coach Wray. While one teacher bent him over and the other paddled, Chris screamed "YOU CAN'T HIT ME!" which was immediately followed by the sound of a very loud WHACK! Chris screamed who knows how many times, and every time he did, the WHACK followed.

It was almost as funny as seeing the look on Martha Harton's face when Mark Sims jumped out the window.

Mike,

Remember when Martha Harden was going to get married and everbody was making a big to-do about it, and she never got married. And the time someone stuck some shoes pointing half out under a door in the clothes closet in her class, and she stood there and yelled, "come out of there, now" over and over.

Yes, I can still see Mark Sims climbing out the window, with Martha yelling, "You come back here."

And remember how bad her fill-in-the-blank tests were. She would read the test out loud while we had to figure what she was leaving out? She and Ms. Clark were stranger than rangers.

Joe was riding a small lift (elevator) at his lakehouse last Thursday when the cable broke and he fell about 12 feet, breaking both legs pretty badly. He had surgery Monday evening at Fayetteville and all went well. He will be off his feet for at least six weeks, and probably have a much longer recovery time before all is okay. I know we all think a lot of him and wanted you all to know what was going on. Not sure when he'll be home, some talk of staying there for a while and rehabbing before getting back to Harrison.

For any of you out there on Facebook who attended Forest Heights and remember "Mr. D," you should become his "friend." He posts frequently and many of his posts are recollections of his early days at Forest Heights. He has a special fondness for those years and he loves to communicate with former students. Yesterday, he posted a great picture of himself, Cheryl Fleming, Pam Barnett and Deborah Madewell that was taken in 1966--pretty amazing!

Becky, he appears on Facebook as "Gerry Duran." He currently lives in Jacksonville. He was born in 1943. I hope this gives you enough information to find him. If not, let me know. Just recently, there have been several posts from Stewart Nance and Grace Gladden with some great pictures of the Buffalo River area.

Thanks Kevin. I found him and added you also. He use to want to put a baseball cap on me and dress me up like a boy because I could run so fast! Now I am lucky if I walk right. He should see my oldest granddaughter run though. He would be amazed. He also taught me everything I know about football!

Becky,

The only time you ran fast in the 6th grade was when you were chasing Rickey Brasel, if my memory serves me correctly. Also, remember our band "The Rebels." Bob Breit, Joe Hickman, Jerry Pledger and me would wear 'Winthrop Rockefeller for governor' hats and pen them up on the sides to make them look like the kind of hats the patriots used. Thus, the Rebels. We knew one song, "I'm Not Your Stepping Stone by the Monkees. We played it over and over at one of Bob Breit's parties. We were a crazy bunch of 6th graders, you know that.

Greg, I remember that party at Bob's house. I "auditioned" to be the backup lead singer and lost out to Donny Gredell, thereby nipping my singing career in the bud. I also recall that Jerry Pederson wrecked his bicycle near Bob's house that night and was injured as a result.

Kevin,

My memory of that party is vague. I think it is because I played the drums throughout the party and never paid attention to what was going on around the house much. You say Jerry Pederson wrecked his bicycle, I believe Bob Breit was already riding motorcycles at that point in time.

And don't forget this one, Kevin. You defeated me in the Forest Heights spelling bee that year, representing Mrs. Fowler's class. I represented Mr.D's class. The spelling contest went on and on between us, and I finally got tired and mispelled the word "grease." Bummer for me. You went on to the Boone County spelling bee, if I remember correctly, but I don't remember how you finished there.

Finished second. Misspelled the word "privilege." I have never needed spell checker for that word--after losing, I spelled that word over and over again in my mind until it was permanently impressed on my brain.

I have not visited the site much lately until I saw on Face Book the invite for the reunion. I certainly hope I have the opportunity to make it next year, lots of friends to say hi to from different graduating classes.

In the mean time I am coming to the Harrison area end of July to officiate a wedding for a good friend of mine. I am going to take some time to see the changes in the area since our last reunion.

Thanks for all the updates.

I am headed to HHS graduation tonight. My nephew and Linda Dickey Melton's son are graduating. It makes me sad and glad to be a part of anything to do with HHS. We were all so lucky to be a part of our class and blessed to have survived our years at HHS. The weather is gorgeous and makes me think of our wonderful Senior Week and all of the other great days spent at the lake. Mari Alice Watkins ence also has a son graduating (he is in Springdale). God bless all of us and all of our families. Malia

I've been feeling rather nostalgic lately myself. One of my coworkers is my same age and we were talking about the music and the time period when we "came of age". It was almost a magical time. Tonight I was listening to the radio and they played an old John Denver song; loads of fond memories poured back of my high school years in Harrison. thanks for sharing Malia.

Would anyone be interested in having some type of get together somewhere besides Harrison? I thought in the middle of the state somewhere, and I would not mind working on one around here if anyone would like to do that. If not maybe just fun at a casino, lake or somewhere. It would be nice to have something in between 10 years that we could just visit and have fun! Up to you all!

You all can email Michael with ideas. There is a place in Dover that has a city park and a guy that does some great catering. He cooks on the site and brings everything. We could get some band together here (we know many people who would just come jam for fun) and who ever else wants to play can bring their instruments. If not anywhere..casino, park or where ever. I just know I can get some people to play music here if anyone likes that idea. I think maybe more could come if it was in the center of the state! When and where let me know and I will be happy to work on it. It would have to be after September though. There is an outage going on at the Nuclear Plant and several of the people there play music. We just need to get the word out and see who all would like to come! I am not sure where Beth is, but wasn't she in the Jonesboro area last reunion?

In case you live out of the area and didn't know it, Harrison and surrounding area has made some infrastructure improvements lately.

From Harrison to the Missouri line it is virtually like an interstate now. Divided highway straight to the line. No more curves and "rock shops" to pass. You can get to Springfield in the wink of an eye. Where it used to be difficult travel is now easy as pie.(Heh, that rhymed)

In Harrison, they have redone industrial park road into a three lane, with the middle lane being a turn zone. It also has sidewalks, of all things, stretching to near the new high school. So what used to be a drag racing strip, (Tim McCutcheon and I raced against each other in our Monte Carlos back in '73, he won), is now a busy highway with three stop lights.

A group of citizens are trying to put the wet-dry issue back on the ballot for 2010. Their motivation is that the sale of alcohol will be a catalyst for the growth of Harrison. Gee, I hope a bunch of alcoholics don't move here.

And last but not least Richie Poe, local dentist, has come out of the closet and expressed his love for Tiger Woods.

Nah, I made that last one up.

But Harrison is a changin'. Hopefully it will always be for the better.

I am coming "home" for a visit next week. 13 to 18 January. Having not been home for a few years, I am looking forward to seeing the changes, AND, looking forward to seeing what has not change. As I looked at Harrison, via Google earth, I was surprised, and please to see so many things look just as they have for decades. If it doesn't change, it must be good; or stubborn.

a little news for those out of town: Remember Stanley Redman from the good old days? When we were in junior high, he was a few years older than us and quite a character. I just remember he seemed to always be causing trouble. Sad story unfolded last week here. They found his body close to Lake Harrison, apparently had been living in a cave up the hill from the lake for a while (found personal effects in cave). He had killed his mother with a rolling pin (she wouldn't give him money for glue sniffing) when he was about 18, and also killed a cell mate with a spoon while incarcerated. He had been out of jail for a while, guess just hanging around Lake Harrison. Nobody knows if he was killed (he had massive trauma facial area) or if he just fell down the mountain and died. The name seemed so familiar when I read the story, and realized finally who this guy was. Guess even Mayberry had some undesirable characters.

Alan Cuthbertson passed away this week. He was 54. Alan and his brother, Steve, attended HHS for about one year...our junior year, I think. He had lived here in Conway for many years. Sadly, I rarely saw him or had a chance to visit and "catch up". He was good friends with our Mayor who kept me advised during his illness (cancer).
Alan was a good guy and was a close friend to Rick Brasel when at HHS as I recall.

I second that! I have much to be thankful about! I'm back in Arkansas and spent a few days in Harrison over the weekend. It's so great to read the postings and hear how everyone is doing. For some reason, the postings about the favorite music of the 70's (from 2006)was at top of the postings, which I had not seen before, but it sure brought back some great memories. I think some of the best music of our time came from the late 60's and early 70's!!
Have a blessed Holiday Season!
