Subject: Alexander Allen 1881

My great, great grandfather was Alexander Allen an instructor on the Akbar mentioned in the 1881 crew and boys list.He came from Chichester in West Sussex after retiring from the Navy, having served in the Crimea. He was mentioned in the incident when the boys on the Akbar tried to set fire to the ship. Also he was on board the boat that was blown down the Mersey and stranded on Frodsham marshes.I first read the account of both incidents in his diary which he wrote retrospectively after he retired. While I have been researching further into his career in the Navy and his service on the Akbar have I found other published accounts of these events. I also have several letters written by the captain of the Akbar as testimony to his character and service. After retiring from service he remained in Rock Ferry and with his family set up the ships chandlery business of Alexander Allen and Son on New Chester Road. My great grandfather and latterly my grandfather and father( all named Alexander Allen) developed the business into ships chandlers painters and decorators.
