Subject: Poppies v Poole Town

Decided to take a break from watching AFCB on Saturday (I wonder why) and took my lad to the Poppies v Poole game. In short both defences on top so 0-0 sums it up. However, what I came on here for (particularly after reading today’s Echo) is the penalty that was never given. As a nuteral, I can tell you it was very obvious and easy to give. This type of thing happens at all levels a thousand times in the course of the season. What amazes me is when a referee has a clear view of the incident, and later states not given as the contact was “accidental”. The ball in must have travelled in the air 25 yards, so this was not a close shot or ball to hand from a bumpy surface. The Bournemouth centre back (Dibba ?) went up with his arms raised above his head (always asking for trouble) and batted the ball downwards – stonewall penalty.
My issue is the wider debate of Ref’s having played the game, and knowing what players are thinking. I realise this was a linesman (no excuse) who took over in the middle, but “Accidental” come on !!! I think the guy did not want to take on a brave but correct decision so ,unfortunately for Poole, copped out.
Still, our first Wessex league game this year seemed to indicate that Poole are the side to beat, as Poppies seemed delighted with a point on the final whistle.
