thanks, fran--kelp contains iodine, and if one is deficient in iodine it can lead to a hypometabolic state. (Yet the opposite is true too, if one is consuming too much iodine it can also slow metabolism.)

Hypothyroid patients are often treated with a form of iodine in conjunction with meds to releave their symptoms.
