Hey Basil! I'm a lurkin' as well...good to see ya! :o)
Fran, in case you check in here instead of email and for anyone else in the UK, I've tried to find resources and have a few recommended ones from others - tho like Basil, living in the US I can't say first hand, they're great but anything's worth a shot when things are tough and you're down and out. Hope something helps Fran and any other Brits out there who are looking for some assistance.
Best wishes,
Deb
Personal suggestions:
You might want to try taking some natural herbs...I stopped taking meds (paxil) a couple of years back and when I have tough times I wish I were back on but they're not the kind of thing to go back and forth with. So I found taking Valerian Root and/or Kava Kava help tremendously in calming and evening out my moods. They usually say take them at night to help you sleep but I keep a bottle at work and 2 at home (one to take with me on day trips) and I pop one or two fairly regularly (tho not every day) and I don't get sleepy but my mood is more even. Look at your local pharmacy and if you don't see either on the shelf ask the pharmacist. Hope the UK carries them, too.
Here are the resources I dug up.
(This was written by the person who used these services in the UK and suggested them):
Help and support for your ED
I contacted the following organisation just a few weeks ago via their e-mail service. I received a reply within 12 hours. They were very helpful and concerned and included many contact numbers and addresses for my area of the country. The following day I called their help-line and the woman was very informative, helpful and extremely friendly, putting me at ease straight away.

Help and support for self-harm issues
I contacted the Self Harm Alliance about a year ago. I am on their mailing list and receive a support booklet every month. You can contribute your own experiences, stories and poetry to this booklet if you wish. The organisation is run by a survivor of self-harm. They do have a support line but unfotunately, it has very limited times due to the organisation being voluntary. The woman who runs the SHA has appeared as a guest on Radio 1's Sunday Surgery programme numerous times now, her advice on there has always been spot-on in my opinion.

I looked this one up today (4/27/05) and supposedly they have international referrals...
