PRESS RELEASE NEWBURGH CHAMBER MUSIC

The American String Quartet returns to perform for Newburgh Chamber Music on Mother’s Day, May 9. Recognized as one of the world’s premiere quartets, the American String Quartet has received rave reviews from the New York Times for its “luxuriously sculptured performances.” The Los Angeles Times praises the American String Quartet for its “comprehensive display of ensemble mastery.” The musicians in this notable quartet are Peter Winograd, violin; Laurie Carney, violin; Daniel Avshalomov, viola; and Wolfram Koessel, cello.

Peter Winograd, a graduate of Juilliard, won the 1988 Naumberg Competition. Laurie Carney, a Juilliard graduate, is on the faculty of the Manhattan School of Music. Daniel Avshalomov was the principal violist for the Juilliard orchestra for five years, and writes essays and criticism for music journals. He is on the faculty of the Manhattan School of Music. Wolfram Koessel has performed widely, and is the musical director of the Mark Morris Dance Group, and is noted for his collaborations with Baryshnikov and Yo-Yo-Ma.

For the Newburgh Chamber Music concert on May 9, the American Quartet will play a quartet by Haydn; the Quartet in F major, Opus 92, “On Kabardinian Themes” by Prokofiev; and the Quartet in A minor, Opus 51, No.2, by Brahms.
The concert will take place at St. George’s Church in Newburgh, on Sunday, May 9, at 3 p.m. As always, homemade refreshments will be served following the concert.
