“LONELY PLANET” AT LIBERTY FREE THEATRE

Liberty — The Liberty Free Theatre will present Steven Dietz's play, Lonely Planet, May 20–23 and May 27–30. Performances are Thursdays, Friday and Saturdays at 7:30 pm and Sundays at 3:00 pm. Admission is free. Seating is limited and reservations are recommended. The audience is invited to gather after the performance for food, drink, and music. The theatre is located at 109 South Main Street, Liberty. Call 292-3788 for reservations and information.

Lonely Planet is the story of Jody and Carl, two gay friends played by John Neails and James Sullivan, trying to navigate their way through the troubling times of the late 70s and early 80s. Surrounded by the maps in Jody's map store and a rising death toll, the two men attempt to fight off cynicism and despair with humor and imagination. The play is a testament to the profound value of human friendship in the face of a mysterious plague of disease and the vicious scapegoating that is its social consequence.

Steven Dietz is the recipient of the PEN U.S.A. Award in Drama, the Kennedy Center Fund for New American Plays Award, the Lila Wallace/Reader's Digest Award, the Yomuiri Shinbun Award for his adaptation of Shusaku Endo's “Silence,” and the 2007 Edgar Allan Poe Award for Best Mystery Play. His plays range from the political to the comedic. His articles on new play development have been widely discussed and reprinted.

John Neails returns to Liberty Free Theatre after his highly acclaimed performance in Vaclav Havel's Audience. He was also featured in the theatre's production of Death of Bessie Smith. James Sullivan is making his fifth appearance at LFT, where he is also well remembered for his leading performance, Bessie Smith. Among his many performances elsewhere, he received a TANYS for his role as Nick in Over the River and Through the Woods. The play was directed by Paul Austin and features the set design of Alexis Siroc and the lighting of Jon-Jon Thomas.

The production is made possible in part with funds from the 2010 Decentralization Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts, administered in Sullivan County by Delaware Valley Arts Alliance.
