"Honor our Nation's Fallen Soldiers at the New Windsor Cantonment"

New Windsor, NY (May 25)-- In honor of America's soldiers and their families on Memorial Day, Monday May 31, at 2:00 PM site staff, in 18th century dress, will perform a ceremony to honor our nation’s veterans at the site cemetery. At 2:15 PM historic balladeer Linda Russell will perform traditional American patriotic music in the Temple Building. Admission is free. For more information please call the site at (845) 561-1765. Nearby Knox's Headquarters State Historic Site will open for the season on Saturday May 29. New Windsor Cantonment is located on Route 300 (Temple Hill Road) in the Town of New Windsor, four miles east of Stewart Airport. It is three miles from the intersection of I-87 and I-84 in Newburgh, New York.

New Windsor Cantonment was an encampment of more than 7,000 Continental Army soldiers and some of their families over the winter of 1782-83. More than 70 years ago, one of the first public ceremonies to award the Purple Heart military decoration was held on Memorial Day, in 1932, at the old campground at New Windsor. Over 100 veterans of the First World War received the Medal.

From 10:00 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. visitors will see soldiers performing musket drills, blacksmithing and other activities performed at the original encampment. Following the concert soldiers will fire their muskets and a cannon on the "Grand Parade", the very field where George Washington's announcement of impending peace was first read to the Army over 200 years ago.

The concert in the site's Temple building has become a favorite annual tradition among Hudson Valley residents. A former National Park Service historian and a performing artist with many popular recordings, Linda Russell specializes in music that tells the stories of the common people of American history. Using a variety of period-style instruments, she performs songs of love and loss, of brave deeds done on the battlefield and home front. Using songs from the Revolutionary War era as a starting point, she follows American music and history right up through the present day. Her performances at the Cantonment and concerts throughout the United States have made her a favorite with audiences all over. The concert is indoors, but outdoor activities may be delayed in case of inclement weather.

Just one mile from the Cantonment, Knox's Headquarters State Historic Site will open for the 2009 season on May 29. Here the Ellison family, one of the most prosperous in the mid-Hudson Valley, during the 18th century, built a country estate called "Mount Ellison." Elegantly furnished by John and Catherine Ellison, the 1754 mansion served as headquarters for Revolutionary War Generals Nathanael Greene, Henry Knox, and Horatio Gates. Beginning on May 29, the home will be open Wednesday through Saturday 10:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. and Sunday 1:00 to 5:00 P.M., through the Labor Day weekend. For more information on Knox's Headquarters please call (845) 561-5498.

In addition to the special programs and activities, the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor and the New Windsor Cantonment Visitor Center are open. These buildings feature the story of the Purple Heart, the history of the New Windsor Cantonment: Behind Every Great Man: The Continental Army in Winter, 1782-83, Revolutionary War artifacts and the exhibit The Last Argument of Kings, Revolutionary War Artillery. A picnic grove is available and there is plenty of free parking. The site is open to the public Saturday May 29 from 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM, Sunday May 30 from 1:00 to 5:00 PM and Monday May 31 from 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM. Also be sure to visit Washington’s Headquarters in Newburgh, a short drive from the New Windsor Cantonment.

New Windsor Cantonment State Historic Site is part of the Palisades Interstate Park Commission. The Palisades Interstate Park Commission administers 27 park, parkways and historic sites for the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation in New York as well as the Palisades Interstate Park and parkway in New Jersey. New Windsor Cantonment is the living history museum of the Northern Continental Army's final post of the Revolutionary War, 1782-1783, and is home to the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor, preserving and sharing the stories of America's military personnel wounded or killed in battle, recipients of the Purple Heart.

Knox's Headquarters is Mount Ellison, the working country seat since 1754 of the prosperous Ellison family who hosted officers of the Continental Army consecutively from 1779 through 1783 including Generals Henry Knox, Nathanael Greene and Horatio Gates .
