First regional production on the East Coast takes places in Forestburgh

Forestburgh, NY, June 23, 2010: On Tuesday, June 22, the Forestburgh Theatre Arts Center (FTAC) at the Forestburgh Playhouse opened the Tony Award Winning AVENUE Q, becoming the first summer theatre in the nation to present the show. AVENUE Q is the zany comedy inspired by Sesame Street, but a Sesame Street for adults only! Most of the characters are puppets (operated by New York based actors) who live on a rundown street in New York City.

Audiences will enjoy the parodies of classic Sesame Street characters, who now face life as adults in their twenties and thirties. Princeton is a recent college graduate with a BA in English who is looking for his “purpose” in life. His story begins when he rents an apartment on Avenue Q and develops friendships with the various tenements. Princeton is played by Scott Evans, who previously starred in I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change, as well as The Mousetrap and Dial ‘M’ for Murder. He develops a romantic connection with Kate Monster, played by Jessica Wagner, a Forestburgh favorite from Hairspray, Doubt, Show Boat, and Gypsy to name a few. Another returning alum is Jim Bray from All Shook Up, Wish You Were Here, and Forever Plaid, in the roles of Nicky and Trekkie Monster. An on sight therapist named Christmas Eve is needed for this motley bunch, played by Caítlín Burke who impressed audiences with The Miracle Worker and The King and I. She is partnered with Max Nussbaum as Brian, a lazy and out of work comedian. Gary Coleman is the landlord of the building and Phoenix Toliver from All Shook Up gives a lively performance in the role. Rounding out the cast is local actress ArianaSepúlveda as a Bad Idea Bear.

“The show is not like anything we’ve ever done at the Playhouse,” said Sarah Norris, Associate Managing Director. “Audiences will have a blast watching this cast bring to life the story with these puppets. It is a little racy, but all in good fun.”

The Cabaret during AVENUE Q is As Seen on TV, featuring songs from classic television shows like “Mr. Ed” and “The Brady Bunch” to some of the more recent series like “FRIENDS” and “Family Guy.” Call for reservations at the Box Office the night of the performance.

AVENUE Q runs from now until Sunday, July 4. There are seven shows a week: Tuesday through Saturday at 8 PM, with matinees on Wednesday and Sunday. Ticket prices range from $33 to $40.

The music for AVENUE Q was written by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx with a book by Jeff Whitty. According to the website, the show is recommended for a mature audience. Please call the Forestburgh Theatre Arts Center Box Office at (845) 794-1194 for tickets. For additional information, please check out the website: http://www.fbplayhouse.org.
